Racing Incident Report

KIDDYLAND, 1st Standby Declared Starter, was withdrawn on 6.2.06 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (bled). CAPITALAND was taken back at the start. BEST POWER was slow to begin. Turning out of the Straight on the first occasion, BEST POWER was awkwardly placed close to the heels of SIXTY SECONDS. After the 800 Metres, CAPITALAND proved difficult to settle. Shortly after straightening, EVERGREEN was steadied and shifted out when disappointed for running inside ARMONDO. Near the 100 Metres, BEST POWER was checked severely when crowded for room between EASTKOWLOON SPIRIT and FORTUNE PRINCESS which drifted out slightly when giving ground. The severity of this interference was extenuated by EASTKOWLOON SPIRIT being turned in as a result of contact being made with its hindquarters. The Stewards were satisfied that as FORTUNE PRINCESS commenced to shift ground, C Brown stopped riding in an endeavour to straighten his mount, therefore no action was taken. Throughout the race, FORTUNE PRINCESS travelled wide and without cover. C Munce (CHECK MATE) said he had been instructed to ride the horse with cover and he anticipated this to be around midfield. He said CHECK MATE began well, travelled into a forward position without being ridden along and he therefore allowed it to cross runners to his inside as there was not an opportunity to obtain cover. He said approaching the winning post the first time he crossed to the fence and allowed ARMONDO to go forward of him, however, CHECK MATE immediately commenced to hang out and over-raced. He said as a consequence CHECK MATE pulled its way up to race outside ARMONDO. He said near the 1000 Metres he allowed CHECK MATE to go forward into the lead, hoping the horse would then relax, however, it failed to do so and continued to hang out. Mr C Fownes, trainer of CHECK MATE, confirmed the instructions issued and said in the circumstances he was satisfied with C Munce's riding of CHECK MATE tonight, however, in future if circumstances permit, CHECK MATE will revert to being ridden with cover. The explanations submitted by C Munce and Mr Fownes were accepted. EVERGREEN, CAPITALAND and CHECK MATE were sent for sampling. After the race, it was reported SERIOUS PLAY had lost its left front plate.
