Racing Incident Report
CHOICE AND CHANCE was slow to begin. On jumping, CAPE PRINCE was bumped by LUCKY FRUIT which shifted out. Shortly after the start, DRAGON INN was checked when crowded for room between AMO and SPACED which was carried out by VITAL PATROL. After the 800 Metres, CHOICE AND CHANCE, which was proving difficult to settle, was awkwardly placed close to the heels of FLYING GENERAL. Near the 100 Metres, LUCKY FRUIT was bumped by AMO which at this time shifted out. Just prior to the winning post, GIANFANTI was crowded for room between CHOICE AND CHANCE and CLASSA FOR EVER which shifted in slightly. Right on the winning post, GIANFANTI was struck over the nose by the whip of Apprentice C W Wong (CHOICE AND CHANCE). Because of this, GIANFANTI was not ridden out right to the end of the race. For the major part of the race, INSIDE MAIL travelled wide and without cover. When questioned, M W Leung (VITAL PATROL) said it was anticipated the horse would not show sufficient speed to take up a forward position in tonight's race and therefore should be ridden around midfield if possible. He said he had been instructed by Mr J Moore, the trainer of the horse, to in the Home Straight ensure VITAL PATROL was properly balanced and ride it out hands and heels. He said VITAL PATROL began satisfactorily, did not show sufficient pace to maintain a forward position, then near the 900 Metres got its head on the side, lay in and caused some crowding to CHOICE AND CHANCE which was improving its position. He said shortly after this at the 800 Metres, VITAL PATROL was steadied when crowded for room between CHOICE AND CHANCE and SPACED which at this time was racing tight inside AMO, as a consequence VITAL PATROL raced at the rear and was then shifted to the rail. He said he remained racing close to the rail rounding the Home Turn, then on straightening shifted to the outside of SPACED and immediately commenced to ride VITAL PATROL along hands and heels. He said when being ridden out in this manner he rode as vigorously as he was able and VITAL PATROL closed the race off strongly. This matter will not be concluded until the Stewards have an opportunity to interview Mr Moore together with M W Leung. VITAL PATROL was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of VITAL PATROL after the race did not show any significant findings. CAPE PRINCE, FLYING GENERAL and CLASSA FOR EVER were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Reports (released on 16 February 2006)
The Veterinary Surgeon reported that CAPE PRINCE was this morning found to have a mild fever.
