Racing Incident Report
REUNION was presented in the Parade Ring without a tongue tie, part of its declared gear. A tongue tie was fitted to REUNION behind the barriers. Assistant trainer, Mr D Lee, representing trainer Mr D J Hall, was advised Mr Hall would be fined $5,000 for this omission. On jumping, BULB KING shifted in and bumped THE WORLD OF LOVE. Despite being ridden along, CANNONISE was slow to muster speed out of the barriers. In the early stages, SANZIRO was steadied and shifted across behind runners, then making the turn at the 1000 Metres proved difficult to settle. Near the 1100 Metres, THE WORLD OF LOVE was steadied when awkwardly placed close to the heels of BULB KING which shifted in when barely clear. Throughout the race, FINANCIAL KID raced greenly, after the 700 Metres when proving difficult to settle got its head up and shifted out away from the heels of SUPER PRINCE, causing DILIGENT to be carried wider. Then in the Home Straight FINANCIAL KID proved difficult to ride. Near the 200 Metres, THE WORLD OF LOVE was steadied when crowded for room between SALUT BEAUTE and SENSIBLE WAY which shifted out after being bumped by BULB KING which was improving into a narrow run between SENSIBLE WAY which was hanging in and REUNION which at this time shifted out. In the circumstances, no action was taken. After the 200 Metres, SENSIBLE WAY, which was giving ground, was momentarily steadied away from the heels of THE WORLD OF LOVE which shifted in. Throughout the race, DRAGON AND GOLD travelled wide and without cover. Apprentice H W Lai (GOLD MEDAL WINNER) explained it was intended to have the horse ridden in a forward position and even lead if possible. He said GOLD MEDAL WINNER began fairly, in the early stages raced tight inside THE WORLD OF LOVE and was reluctant to hold its position. He said he pulled the whip on GOLD MEDAL WINNER making the turn at the 1000 Metres in an endeavour to maintain a position, however, GOLD MEDAL WINNER continued to give ground and appeared to resent racing inside horses. He said at the 600 Metres GOLD MEDAL WINNER shifted in and bumped the running rail and in the Straight with clear running finished the race off strongly. The explanation submitted by Apprentice Lai was accepted. REUNION was sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, REUNION was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of mucopus in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, REUNION will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. THE WORLD OF LOVE, SANZIRO and CANNONISE were sent for sampling.
