Racing Incident Report
Prior to being paraded for the race, KINDACROSS had its left hind plate reset. KINDACROSS was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion the horse was suitable to race. When the gates opened, KINDACROSS, which had been fractious in the stalls, sat back, bounded in the air and as a consequence lost a considerable amount of ground. Shortly after the start, ABSOLUTE CHAMPION was bumped by SAN LORENZO which shifted out after making contact with CHATEAU KING PRAWN. At the 700 Metres, ROYAL DELIGHT was steadied away from the heels of FIGURES. Making the Home Turn, BRAINS TRUST hung out. When questioned, Apprentice K L Chui (TRIUMPHANT UNICORN), said he had been instructed to go into a forward position on the horse if possible. He said he took this to mean a position at least with the lead. He said accordingly he rode TRIUMPHANT UNICORN along in the early stages of the race and crossed to race outside BRAINS TRUST. He said after crossing, he then came back to race a half length behind BRAINS TRUST in the hope that his horse would relax for him, however, making the turn at the 800 Metres TRIUMPHANT UNICORN commenced to hang out and would not settle. He said because of this TRIUMPHANT UNICORN improved to race on almost equal terms with BRAINS TRUST. He did say he was aware the tempo of the race in the early stages was fast, however, because of the manner in which TRIUMPHANT UNICORN raced after the 800 Metres he was unable to steady his mount to allow the tempo to slow. Mr C S Shum, the trainer of TRIUMPHANT UNICORN, confirmed the riding instructions issued to Apprentice Chui and said he believed with the 10 lb apprentice riding TRIUMPHANT UNICORN, this would allow the horse its best opportunity in the race. He said TRIUMPHANT UNICORN had previously raced in forward positions although usually over distances of longer than today's 1200 Metres. The explanations submitted by Apprentice Chiu and Mr Shum were reported. Apprentice C W Wong (FIGURES) explained making the turn after the 800 Metres his mount hung out, near the 600 Metres he looked to his inside to ensure he was clear of other runners when he was endeavouring to shift to a position with cover behind the leaders. He said FIGURES continued to hang out and on straightening shifted wider on the track. When questioned regarding his riding in the Home Straight, W M Lai (SILVER SUN) said he had travelled on the rail behind LIBERAL'S KNIGHT throughout the run. He said prior to straightening he shifted away from the rail in the hope of obtaining clear running between LIBERAL'S KNIGHT and SAN LORENZO which was racing to that horse's outside. He said when he did this he was inside the heels of SAN LORENZO and therefore in the early part of the Straight it was not possible for him without steadying his mount to shift to the outside of SAN LORENZO. He said the run did not eventuate between LIBERAL'S KNIGHT and SAN LORENZO and therefore at the 300 Metres when SAN LORENZO had gone sufficiently forward of him, he immediately shifted to the outside of that horse. He said he then balanced SILVER SUN and commenced to ride along vigorously hands and heels and the horse made up ground towards the heels of NOBLE CRUSADER which when giving ground shifted out. He said after this he shifted out further and rode his mount out fully in the run to the line. He said SILVER SUN closed the race off strongly. Mr C H Yip, trainer of SILVER SUN, after viewing the videos, said he was satisfied with W M Lai's riding of the horse. W M Lai was told his explanation would be reported. SILVER SUN was sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, SILVER SUN was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of mucopus in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, SILVER SUN will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. ROYAL DELIGHT, ABSOLUTE CHAMPION and BRAINS TRUST were sent for sampling. After the race, it was reported SAN LORENZO had lost its right hind plate. After the race, NOBLE CRUSADER was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, NOBLE CRUSADER will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
