Racing Incident Report
ABLE KNIGHT was withdrawn on raceday morning by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (abrasions and swelling to the left hind leg). Before being allowed to race again, ABLE KNIGHT will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. WONG'S FAVOURITE began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped the hindquarters of ELEPHANT DANCE. MATIRI KING began awkwardly, got its head up and lost ground. As the gates opened, SUMMERVILLE POWER put its head down and was slow to begin. When questioned, S Dye (GOLD FIELD) said prior to the race he had discussed the manner in which the horse should be ridden with Mr S Woods, trainer of the horse. It was decided as tonight's track appeared to be favouring horses in a forward position that if GOLD FIELD began well, it should be allowed to travel forward, however, if the horse did not show early speed, it would be dropped in. S Dye said GOLD FIELD began well, he did not ride along and GOLD FIELD was able to obtain a forward position without any pressure being applied to it. Mr Woods confirmed the pre-race discussion he had had with S Dye. The explanations submitted by S Dye and Mr Woods were accepted. Apprentice H W Lai (MEATH) was unable to offer any explanation for the poor performance of the horse. He said at no stage throughout the race did MEATH travel on the bit. DIAMOND ERA and MEATH were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of DIAMOND ERA and MEATH after the race did not show any significant findings. KOWLOON FIT, SOCRATES and GOLD FIELD were sent for sampling.
