Racing Incident Report

HOLD HANDS was withdrawn prior to Race 1 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (fever). Before being allowed to race again, HOLD HANDS will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. Whilst in the Parade Ring, it was noted FANTASTIC WIN had lost its left front plate. This plate was refitted. FANTASTIC WIN was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. SHANGDONG SCHOLAR was a little slow to begin, then shortly afterwards lost further ground when crowded for room between NICKU NICKU and TRIUMPH which on jumping bumped with BARRACUDA and then shifted out. After the 1500 Metres, TRIUMPH was steadied after being bumped and then being crowded for room between SHANGDONG SCHOLAR and BARRACUDA which when being ridden along to go forward shifted out. After the 1400 Metres, SOUTH BREEZE was checked to avoid the heels of BARRACUDA (Apprentice P H Lo) which after initially being shifted in got its head on the side, then shifted in further when not clear. Apprentice Lo was severely reprimanded and told to exercise greater care. In the early stages, NICKU NICKU proved difficult to settle. After the 1200 Metres, when proving difficult to settle, SHANGDONG SCHOLAR got its head up. Near the 1100 Metres, FANTASTIC WIN was checked to avoid the heels of SOUTH BREEZE which at this time was steadied away from the heels of SHANGDONG SCHOLAR which was steadied to allow ROCKET POWER to cross. No action was taken. After the 600 Metres, SOUTH BREEZE was carried back by SHANGDONG SCHOLAR which at this time was giving ground. For the major part of the race, TRIUMPH travelled wide and without cover. D Beadman (ABLE KNIGHT) explained his mount was making ground steadily over the final 200 Metres. He said after the 50 Metres he was improving towards a run between BARRACUDA and ROCKET POWER, however, ROCKET POWER commenced to drift in, he therefore shifted ABLE KNIGHT out as he believed he would be interfered with by ROCKET POWER. He said close to the winning post he was then awkward on the heels of ROCKET POWER and was not able to ride his mount out to the end of the race. D Beadman was told whilst the Stewards accepted ROCKET POWER had commenced to shift in and no action would be taken on this occasion, he nonetheless should ensure he rides his mounts out to the end of the race where circumstances permit. SHANGDONG SCHOLAR and FLYING WIN were sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, SHANGDONG SCHOLAR was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea. Also after the race, FLYING WIN was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of mucopus in the horse's trachea. The performances of SHANGDONG SCHOLAR and FLYING WIN, which tailed out, were considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, SHANGDONG SCHOLAR and FLYING WIN will both have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. SOUTH BREEZE and ROCKET POWER were sent for sampling. After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported TRIUMPH had lost its left hind plate.
