Racing Incident Report

CAPABILITY, HOLD HANDS and DIAMOND FLYER were slow to begin. After the 1200 Metres, GREAT HERO, which was racing wide on the track, was ridden to go forward and cross to race outside the lead. At the 800 Metres, VITAL PATROL was left racing without cover, then on straightening was carried wider by ACCELERATOR which was carried out by CHINA HERO which shifted into clear running. After the 600 Metres, SINOSPIEL was steadied away from the heels of FORTUNE WHEEL. Near the 300 Metres, GREAT HERO, which was giving ground, was steadied when crowded for room between FORTUNE WHEEL which shifted out and BRILLIANT TREASURE which was carried in by CHINA HERO which shifted ground when hanging. SINOSPIEL, which was following, was steadied in consequence. CHINA HERO continued to hang in and proved difficult to ride. For the major part of the race, DIAMOND FLYER hung in. F Coetzee (FORTUNE WHEEL) explained after the 200 Metres when he changed the whip into his left hand, it became entangled with A Delpech, the rider of CHINA HERO. A Delpech said at this time F Coetzee's whip became entangled in his hand as he was changing the whip into the forehand. He said he was not able to release F Coetzee's whip for several strides as for him to do so would mean he would drop his own whip. A Delpech was told as the Stewards could not be satisfied his action was intentional, no action would be taken, however, he should be cautious in similar circumstances. C K Tong (LUCKY DANSKE) said from the outside barrier he had been instructed to ride the horse in about midfield if possible. He said LUCKY DANSKE was stepping up in distance to 1400 Metres today after having run twice over 1000 Metres. He said LUCKY DANSKE began well, he initially rode along to ensure the horse did not get too far back, however, it soon became apparent to him that no other runner seemed intent on taking the lead. He said he looked to his inside to see if he would be able to obtain a position with cover, however, in his opinion he would have been obliged to continue racing wide on the track, therefore after the 1200 Metres he allowed LUCKY DANSKE to go forward, cross to the fence in the lead and then steady the tempo. W M Lai (FAST WINNER) said he had been instructed to ride the horse in midfield. He said after beginning well FAST WINNER commenced to travel keenly and he steadied his mount. He said at the 1300 Metres when FAST WINNER shifted in, he received a call from a runner to his inside, so he shifted his mount back out to prevent causing interference. He said approaching the 1000 Metres he was obliged to steady FAST WINNER away from the heels of CHINA HERO which at this time shifted in after being bumped by ACCELERATOR. He said as a consequence FAST WINNER travelled a little further back than intended. D Whyte (GREAT HERO) was unable to offer any explanation for the poor performance of the horse. He said GREAT HERO was fractious in the barriers, however, in his opinion that did not attribute to the horse giving ground in the manner in which it did in the Home Straight. Further he said the fact that the horse went forward to race outside the lead in the early stages in his opinion did not account for the poor performance. MONTY and GREAT HERO were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of MONTY and GREAT HERO after the race did not show any significant findings. FORTUNE WHEEL and HOLD HANDS were sent for sampling. After the race, it was reported CHINA HERO had sustained a cut to the left hind heel. Also after the race, Trainer A T Millard reported there was a small quantity of blood present at the right nostril of BRILLIANT TREASURE. Therefore an endoscopic examination was conducted on the horse. The Veterinary Officer reported this examination showed the horse's trachea to be clean and therefore was not deemed to have bled.
