Racing Incident Report
RED WINE HONEY was slow to begin. UNIQUE SPEED began awkwardly. In the early stages, MUTUAL FUN was taken back. Approaching the 1400 Metres, LE ROSSIGNOL got its head up and to the side and shifted out, resulting in LUCKY MONEY being carried wider. For some distance after the 1200 Metres, FLORAL NIRVANA, which had attempted to shift away from the rail from behind UNIQUE SPEED, raced tight inside WIN PRACTITIONER which held its ground. As a result, FLORAL NIRVANA was disappointed for running and steadied. Making the Home Turn, WIN PRACTITIONER and UNIQUE SPEED hung out. Prior to straightening, MUTUAL FUN was steadied and shifted to the outside of INDUSTRIAL EXPRESS. After the 400 Metres, WINNING SPEED improved into a narrow run on the inside of UNIQUE SPEED which was hanging in. Approaching and passing the 300 Metres, RED WINE HONEY was held up and unable to improve. After the 300 Metres, FIRST BABY (K Tanaka) shifted out abruptly when struck with the whip. This caused inconvenience to DASHING THUNDER which was bumped, became unbalanced, shifted out and in turn caused DASH AHEAD to be carried wider which resulted in INDUSTRIAL EXPRESS being crowded for room and being steadied. As the Stewards were satisfied K Tanaka stopped riding and straightened his mount, no action was taken. After the 200 Metres, RED WINE HONEY, which was closing the race off strongly, was steadied and shifted to the outside of FIRST BABY, then after the 100 Metres was awkwardly placed close to the heels of DASHING THUNDER. Just prior to the winning post, WIN PRACTITIONER and FLORAL NIRVANA bumped. Throughout the race, FIRST BABY travelled wide and without cover. O Doleuze (WINNING SPEED) explained he had been instructed from a wide barrier to ride the horse which was having its first start in Hong Kong wearing blinkers in a rearward position. He pointed out WINNING SPEED was stepping up in distance and when the horse had previously raced in blinkers in New Zealand, it had been successful when being ridden from a rearward position. He said when being ridden in this manner today WINNING SPEED finished the race off in his opinion only fairly. He said from a more favourable barrier, it may be that WINNING SPEED will be ridden more prominently. FIRST BABY was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of FIRST BABY after the race did not show any significant findings. FLORAL NIRVANA and WIN PRACTITIONER were sent for sampling.
