Racing Incident Report
On jumping, SO NICE got its head up, lost ground and was then taken across behind runners. From the outside barrier, FIRST KNIGHT was taken across behind runners shortly after the start. AIPODER IMAGE, which had been fractious in the stall, was slow to begin and then despite being ridden along failed to muster speed. Near the 1200 Metres, GRAND GENERAL was steadied to avoid the heels of ELEPHANT STAR which was carried in by REDHILL COMMANDER which shifted in away from NEW ASIA FORWARD (F Coetzee) after initially being carried in by that horse. In this incident, DRAGON BOY also became unbalanced after being bumped by ELEPHANT STAR. F Coetzee was advised to exercise greater care. Also near the 1200 Metres, MASTER OF SHAVERS, which was racing wide on the track, was allowed to commence drifting back to obtain a position with cover. As a consequence, MASTER OF SHAVERS raced near the rear. Approaching the turn at the 1000 Metres, SO NICE became unbalanced when hampered by FIRST KNIGHT (B Prebble) which shifted closer to the rail. B Prebble was reprimanded and told to exercise greater care. Making the turn at the 800 Metres, FIRST KNIGHT was bumped and carried wider by SO NICE which made the turn awkwardly and shifted out when being steadied away from the heels of AIPODER IMAGE. From on straightening until after the 300 Metres, CLASSIC HORSE had difficulty obtaining clear running, then at the 200 Metres was steadied and shifted in to avoid the heels of NEW ASIA FORWARD which was giving ground. CLASSIC HORSE again did not obtain clear running over the concluding stages and because of this was not ridden out to the end of the race as it normally would be. From shortly after straightening until the 200 Metres, ALIVE AND KICKING was held up and unable to obtain clear running and near the 300 Metres shifted out, causing inconvenience to ACTUARIAL TALENT. After the 200 Metres, ACTUARIAL TALENT was steadied when momentarily tightened for room between SO NICE and ALIVE AND KICKING which was carried out slightly by SHINING DRAGON which shifted when giving ground. M Du Plessis (ACTUARIAL TALENT) explained the intention had been to ride the horse in 5th or 6th position with cover if possible. He said today the blinkers had been removed from ACTUARIAL TALENT because when wearing that gear in its most recent start the horse did not relax. He said ACTUARIAL TALENT did not begin well today and he therefore elected to allow runners drawn to his inside to go forward of him in the early stages. He said near the 1100 Metres he shifted ACTUARIAL TALENT across towards the rail and commenced to ride along in the hope of being able to improve his position, however, GRAND GENERAL near the 1200 Metres shifted in in front of him and as a consequence he travelled further back than anticipated. When questioned regarding the performance of REDHILL COMMANDER, Z Purton explained in its two most recent starts, REDHILL COMMANDER had drawn favourably and was able to obtain a nice position in the run. He said today from barrier 9 REDHILL COMMANDER began well and he allowed the horse to stride forward in the early stages in the hope of being able to obtain a position around midfield with cover. He said after the 1200 Metres when he continued to race wide on the track, he steadied REDHILL COMMANDER and shifted to a three wide position behind DRAGON BOY with cover slightly worse than midfield. He said REDHILL COMMANDER travelled reasonably throughout the run, however, in the Straight did not respond to his riding. He said in his opinion even though he did race with cover, the performance of REDHILL COMMANDER was affected by the horse covering ground in the run. REDHILL COMMANDER was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. A veterinary inspection of REDHILL COMMANDER after the race did not show any significant findings. D Whyte (SHINING DRAGON) was not able to offer any explanation for the poor performance of the horse. He said when he had previously been successful on SHINING DRAGON, the horse had good natural speed and travelled keenly. He said today the intention was to lead on SHINING DRAGON, however, at no stage of the race did the horse travel as it had in the past. He said he was able to cross and race outside the lead on SHINING DRAGON, however, the horse was under pressure to maintain this position in the run and then on straightening gave ground. SHINING DRAGON was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of SHINING DRAGON after the race did not show any significant findings. FIRST KNIGHT and GRAND GENERAL were sent for sampling. After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that GRAND GENERAL had sustained an abrasion wound to the inside of its left front knee.
