Racing Incident Report
THE WITCH’S BROOM was slow to begin. EAST OCEAN began awkwardly and then shortly after the start bumped with EURO SWIFTLY which was taken in slightly by GOLD CITY. Shortly after the start, SURE GAIN was steadied away from the heels of CRISTAL MAGNUM which shifted out after blundering at the start. Passing the 1600 Metres, GLENEALY VIKING was steadied away from the heels of GOLD CITY which shifted out. Approaching the winning post on the first occasion, GOLD CITY shifted in and bumped EAST OCEAN which became unbalanced and in turn shifted in and made contact with CAGA BOY. Approaching the 1200 Metres, KINGSTON MARBLE was checked away from the heels of GOLD CITY which at this time was steadied in an attempt to find cover. When KINGSTON MARBLE was checked, it shifted out, resulting in GLENEALY VIKING improving its position to the inside of KINGSTON MARBLE. For this reason, KINGSTON MARBLE was left racing three wide and without cover for the remainder of the race. Passing the 1200 Metres, CAGA BOY was momentarily crowded for room inside EAST OCEAN which at this time was taken in slightly by CRISTAL MAGNUM. EURO SWIFTLY, which was following CAGA BOY, was steadied in consequence. At the entrance to the Straight, EURO SWIFTLY was awkwardly placed close to the heels of KINGSTON MARBLE. Passing the 200 Metres, EURO SWIFTLY and GLENEALY VIKING bumped as EURO SWIFTLY shifting out and away from CRISTAL MAGNUM which at this time shifted out under pressure. After this, GLENEALY VIKING was awkwardly placed for some distance between UNIQUE SPEED and EURO SWIFTLY. Then close to the finishing line, GLENEALY VIKING was steadied away from the heels of EURO SWIFTLY which shifted out slightly. When questioned, G Cheyne (EAST OCEAN) stated that passing the 900 Metres he elected to allow CRISTAL MAGNUM, which had been racing to the outside of EAST OCEAN, to cross as he had made more use of the horse in the early stages to take up a forward position than had been hoped. He said approaching the 800 Metres when CRISTAL MAGNUM commenced to steady the tempo, he considered shifting to the outside of that horse, however, he elected to remain racing on the fence behind CRISTAL MAGNUM as he believed that that horse would again quicken the tempo near the 600 Metres. He said however that the tempo of the race did not quicken as he expected and in hindsight the interests of EAST OCEAN would have been better served by shifting to the outside of CRISTAL MAGNUM near the 800 Metres rather than remaining racing behind that horse. G Cheyne added that rounding the Home Turn he was awkwardly placed close to the heels of CRISTAL MAGNUM. He said as he felt that that horse was shifting in at the entrance to the Straight, he attempted to obtain clear running to the outside of CRISTAL MAGNUM, however, shortly afterwards it became apparent to him that CRISTAL MAGNUM would not shift in, therefore he shifted EAST OCEAN inwards to obtain clear running. He said after this EAST OCEAN finished off the race only fairly. G Cheyne was advised that, in the opinion of the Stewards, he should have come away from the fence near the 800 Metres rather than allowing GOLD CITY to improve to his outside. EAST OCEAN, EURO SWIFTLY and UNIQUE SPEED were sent for sampling. After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that CRISTAL MAGNUM had lost its right front plate.
