Racing Incident Report

BEL CANTO and GOLD CITY were slow to begin. HUA SHI was steadied shortly after the start when crowded for room between SPEED RACER and LIVERBIRD, both of which shifted ground. Shortly after the start, CLOVIS was bumped by GORGEOUS RULER which shifted out. Passing the 1200 Metres, HUA SHI was steadied when awkwardly placed close to the heels of ICE FIRE. Approaching the 1000 Metres, ICE FIRE, which was reluctant to maintain its position inside SPEED RACER (J Lloyd), was severely checked when momentarily crowded for room inside SPEED RACER which got its head on the side and shifted in. HUA SHI, which was following, was severely checked away from the heels of ICE FIRE and LIVERBIRD and LUCKY EMPEROR were also badly hampered. As the Stewards were of the view that there had been a number of factors which contributed to this incident, no further action was taken other than that J Lloyd was advised to do all he can in similar circumstances to prevent his mounts from shifting ground. At the entrance to the Straight, ICE FIRE was steadied away from the heels of HEALTHY CONTENDER. Near the 350 Metres, PURE ALPHA was shifted to the outside of GOLD CITY to find clear running. Approaching the 200 Metres, LIVERBIRD was steadied away from the heels of DANESOUTH which got its head on the side and shifted out. At the 200 Metres, DANESOUTH was struck across the nose by the whip of N Callan (CLOVIS). Passing the 150 Metres, LIVERBIRD was checked when crowded for room between DANESOUTH which shifted out slightly and LUCKY EMPEROR (H W Lai) which shifted in marginally away from SAMMY’S FORTUNE as that horse improved to its outside. H W Lai was advised to ensure that he makes every effort to prevent his mounts from shifting ground and causing interference in similar circumstances. A veterinary inspection of HEALTHY CONTENDER after the race including an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of mucopus in the horse's trachea. The Veterinary Officer also reported that HEALTHY CONTENDER had lost its right front plate and that SPEED RACER had sustained a laceration to the left hind cannon. A veterinary inspection of WINFINDER after the race including an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of mucopus in the horse's trachea and was a “roarer” as previously reported. DANESOUTH, SPEED RACER and SAMMY’S FORTUNE were sent for sampling.
