Racing Incident Report

DUKE’S VICTORY bounded in the air at the start and consequently was slow to begin. Despite being ridden along in the early stages, AIPODER IMAGE failed to muster speed. DUKE’S VICTORY was held up for clear running at the entrance to the Straight and then shortly after the 400 Metres was shifted out after being disappointed for running between METREVELLI and DR UNION. Then near the 300 Metres, DUKE’S VICTORY was shifted out further after again being disappointed for running between DR UNION and MEDIC FORTUNE. MUTUAL GAIN, SUGAR ON TOP and NEWSWIRE TOO all had difficulty obtaining clear running in the early part of the Straight. Apprentice C Y Ho (FLYING KEEPER) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that near the 300 Metres he failed to make sufficient effort to prevent his mount from shifting ground, resulting in FLYING KEEPER shifting out across the rightful running of METREVELLI which was checked and further that FLYING KEEPER shifted out across the rightful running of DR UNION, causing that horse to also be checked and lose the running to which it was rightfully entitled. Apprentice Ho was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Thursday, 10 November 2011 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). This suspension is with immediate effect. Near the 100 Metres, D Beadman (SUGAR ON TOP) dropped his whip. Throughout the race, DR UNION travelled wide and without cover. When questioned, Apprentice C Y Ho, in the presence of his allocated trainer, Mr C Fownes, explained that after the 600 Metres he angled FLYING KEEPER to the outside of METREVELLI in anticipation of being able to obtain a run outside of METREVELLI and inside DR UNION. He said rounding the Home Turn he attempted to push DR UNION out to obtain clear running, however, as DR UNION was travelling well at this time and was racing in advance of FLYING KEEPER, he felt it was a better option to shift to the inside of METREVELLI and follow the eventual winner, SUPER PEPPER through rather than continuing to attempt the run between METREVELLI and DR UNION. He added as he committed to the inside of the heels of METREVELLI, DR UNION got its head on the side and shifted out which ultimately resulted in a tight run becoming available, however, by this time, he had already chosen to follow SUPER PEPPER through. Apprentice Ho’s explanation was accepted. A veterinary inspection of PRINCE OF SUNSHINE after the race revealed that the horse was displaying an irregular heart rhythm. Before being permitted to race again, PRINCE OF SUNSHINE will be required to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. A veterinary inspection of MEDIC FORTUNE after the race revealed that the horse had sustained a small cut to the left front coronet and a cut to its mouth. A veterinary inspection of DUKE’S VICTORY after the race did not show any significant findings. MEDIC FORTUNE, SUPER PEPPER and SUGAR ON TOP were sent for sampling.
