Racing Incident Report

HECO RIDER shifted out abruptly at the start and in doing so made heavy contact with MAKE IT. DOUBLE MOON was checked shortly after the start when crowded for room between SUPER PEPPER which shifted in and FORTUNE STAR which shifted out after bumping FLASHING GUY. Making the first turn after the 1000 Metres, SUPER PEPPER was left racing three wide and without cover and shortly after entering the Back Straight was steadied to obtain a position with cover behind FLASHING GUY. Making the turn near the 1000 Metres, CHATER POWER was left racing wide and without cover and passing the 900 Metres was allowed to stride into a more forward position. However, CHATER POWER continued to race wide and without cover. Near the 800 Metres, FAIR NAVIGATOR was bumped by FORTUNE STAR which shifted in momentarily when awkwardly placed close to the heels of CHATER POWER. Making the turn after the 600 Metres, DOUBLE MOON (M Du Plessis) got its head on the side and hung out towards the heels of SERENDIPITY. M Du Plessis stated that his mount raced greenly throughout the race and was inclined to shift ground on a number of occasions. Near the 500 Metres and rounding the Home Turn, FAIR NAVIGATOR got its head on the side and hung out. Over the final 50 Metres, FLASHING GUY raced in restricted room between SERENDIPITY and HECO RIDER which got its head on the side and shifted in. Then, right at the finishing line, FLASHING GUY was steadied when crowded for room between SERENDIPITY and HECO RIDER. When questioned, T Clark stated that after the blindfold was removed from AL PRINCE in the barriers, the horse became fractious and as the gates were released was slow to begin. He said in the early stages he shifted in to be racing one horse off the rail outside LONGWAH KID, but was taken into a three wide position by that horse which shifted out near the 900 Metres. He said at this time AL PRINCE got its head on the side and was also inclined to shift out away from LONGWAH KID. He said after the 700 Metres rather than continue to race three wide and possibly to be taken wider by LONGWAH KID due to the fact that AL PRINCE was not travelling strongly, he elected to steady AL PRINCE and shift in behind LONGWAH KID to obtain a position on the rail. He said although it was available to him to improve his position outside LONGWAH KID and attempt to obtain a position closer to FORTUNE STAR which was racing in a three wide position, that horse was a considerable margin ahead of AL PRINCE and he was of the view that AL PRINCE was not travelling well enough at this time to be able to improve its position to be closer to the back of that horse. He said rounding the Home Turn he was able to improve his position to the inside of LONGWAH KID and in the Straight AL PRINCE finished off the race strongly after having to be steadied away from the heels of SUPER PEPPER near the 100 Metres which at this time was giving ground. T Clark was advised that his explanation would be reported. When questioned, W C Marwing stated that he had been instructed, from barrier 1, to allow LONGWAH KID to obtain a forward position behind the leaders if possible. He said although he was instructed not to make use of LONGWAH KID in the early stages as the horse may be difficult to settle, it was felt that the horse had sufficient early speed to be able to take up a forward position. He said LONGWAH KID began only fairly and shortly after the start was steadied when crowded for room inside HECO RIDER. He said after this LONGWAH KID did not stretch out despite being niggled at to obtain a more forward position and consequently raced much further back than had been intended. He said at no stage of the race did LONGWAH KID stretch out and although the horse did not feel sore, in his opinion, its action did not feel comfortable. He added he commenced to ride LONGWAH KID along after the 500 Metres to have it improve its position, however, despite being ridden along, the horse did not respond and, in his opinion, was most disappointing. Trainer C Fownes confirmed the instructions given to Jockey Marwing and stated that as the horse is difficult to settle in its track work, he had elected to give it two barrier trials following its most recent run in preparation for tonight’s race. He said he was not able to explain the disappointing performance of the horse as it was expected that LONGWAH KID would perform well. A veterinary inspection of LONGWAH KID after the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of LONGWAH KID was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, LONGWAH KID will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. A veterinary inspection of FLASHING GUY after the race including an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea. After the race, an endoscopic examination was conducted on FAIR NAVIGATOR at the request of Trainer A T Millard. The Veterinary Surgeon said this examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, FLASHING GUY and FAIR NAVIGATOR will both be subjected to an official veterinary examination. A veterinary inspection of SUPER PEPPER after the race did not show any significant findings. FLASHING GUY, NOVEL START and MAKE IT were sent for sampling.
<14/6/2012 Additional Veterinary Report>LONGWAH KID, which performed poorly, was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said at that time there were no significant findings. LONGWAH KID was again examined by the Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer C Fownes this morning. He said at this time he noted the horse to be lame in its right front leg. As previously advised, LONGWAH KID will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination before being permitted to race again.
