Racing Incident Report

CHATER POWER was withdrawn on 9.7.12 by order of the Stewards (retired) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter GALLANT MAMBO. HECO RIDER was slow to begin. From wide barriers, FORTUNE TOGETHER and PERFECT FIT were taken across behind runners shortly after the start. After this, PERFECT FIT, despite being ridden along, became detached from the field in the early stages. Near the 1000 Metres, JUN DAO was steadied when crowded for room between DOUBLE MOON which shifted out slightly when proving difficult to settle and MAKE IT which was taken in by O’HALO which got its head on the side and shifted in despite the efforts of its rider. After the 1000 Metres, MAKE IT and O’HALO were crowded for room between SURFER BOY which shifted out after being bumped on the hindquarters by MAKE IT and GALLANT MAMBO (M Chadwick) which shifted in marginally. M Chadwick was reprimanded and advised to ensure that he is sufficiently clear of runners to his inside prior to shifting ground in future. Rounding the Home Turn, JUN DAO was awkwardly placed close to the heels of DOUBLE MOON which itself was racing close to the heels of HECO RIDER. For the majority of the race, O’HALO travelled wide and without cover. When questioned regarding his riding of SURFER BOY after the 900 Metres, Apprentice K C Ng stated that after being instructed to have the horse in about 3rd or 4th position if possible, he had obtained a position behind SOLAR UP which was racing to the outside of the leader, BENEFACTOR. He said at this time GALLANT MAMBO was in a three wide position outside of and in advance of SURFER BOY and he was aware that the rider of that horse was shifting GALLANT MAMBO in to obtain a position behind SOLAR UP. He said as his horse was travelling comfortably at this time and was settled, he was reluctant to ride SURFER BOY along to maintain his position behind SOLAR UP and inside GALLANT MAMBO. He said he felt that had he have pushed SURFER BOY to maintain this position, the horse may commence to over-race as it had done in some of its races previously and therefore would not be able to finish off the race. He added therefore after the 700 Metres he allowed GALLANT MAMBO to cross to race in front of SURFER BOY. He said after this SURFER BOY travelled comfortably until near the 500 Metres at which time the horse commenced to be awkwardly placed close to the heels of GALLANT MAMBO and inside O’HALO. He said after racing tight inside O’HALO for a short distance, SURFER BOY became awkwardly placed close to the heels of GALLANT MAMBO rounding the Home Turn and he had to check SURFER BOY away from the heels of that horse. He said following this incident, SURFER BOY had clear and uninterrupted running to the winning post. Apprentice Ng stated that he felt that, in retrospect, he should have made an effort to maintain his position inside GALLANT MAMBO rather than allowing that horse to cross. Trainer C H Yip confirmed the instructions given to Apprentice Ng and stated that he considered Apprentice Ng had erred in failing to maintain his position on the back of SOLAR UP as, in his opinion, he had the opportunity to do this without having to make use of SURFER BOY. Apprentice Ng was severely reprimanded regarding his riding of SURFER BOY at this stage of the race and advised that the decision to allow GALLANT MAMBO to cross SURFER BOY had lacked judgement. He was told that there were a number of occasions this season that he had to be spoken to by the Stewards in regards to his decision making in races and he must, wherever possible, ride in such a manner so as to ensure that his horses are given every opportunity to win or to obtain the best possible placing. A veterinary inspection of MAKE IT after the race did not show any significant findings. A veterinary inspection of GALLANT MAMBO after the race, which was eased out in the Straight, found that horse to be lame in the right front leg. NOVEL START, HECO RIDER and BENEFACTOR were sent for sampling.
