Racing Incident Report

SURROUNDED began awkwardly.
HAPPY CENTENARY shifted in on jumping and bumped LIBERAL OF MIND.
Shortly after the start, STREET CAT lost ground when crowded for room between PEPPERMINT which got its head on the side and shifted out and SURROUNDED which was taken in by KYNAM.
From a wide barrier, GRAND CHAMPION was taken across behind runners in the early stages.
Passing the 1200 Metres, LIBERAL OF MIND proved difficult to settle and was checked away from the heels of KYNAM for some distance.
Near the 900 Metres, WEALTHY FORTUNE was left racing wide and without cover.
In the early stages, SURROUNDED proved difficult to settle and approaching the 800 Metres got its head up when being checked away from the heels of STREET CAT.
Despite being ridden along, KYNAM was unable to maintain its position between DRAGON FIGHTER and PEPPERMINT after the 800 Metres. After this, KYNAM was ridden along in an attempt to improve outside PEPPERMINT and in doing so raced tight inside ELEGANCE KLAMMER which was ridden along to maintain its position. Then near the 650 Metres, KYNAM and ELEGANCE KLAMMER were both steadied away from the heels of PEPPERMINT and DRAGON FIGHTER respectively. When this happened, GRAND CHAMPION, which was following KYNAM and was being ridden along in an attempt to improve outside that horse, clipped the heels of KYNAM and blundered badly, resulting in its rider, K C Leung, being dislodged. The Stewards were satisfied that this incident did not result from carelessness being exhibited by any jockey, rather it was due to the circumstances of the race at the time. Accordingly, no action was taken. Subsequently K C Leung was examined by the Club’s medical officers and passed fit to fulfil his remaining riding engagements. When GRAND CHAMPION fell, LIBERAL OF MIND was checked and shifted in abruptly, resulting in SURROUNDED being crowded for room. After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that GRAND CHAMPION had sustained an over-reaching wound to the left front bulb of the heel.
STREET CAT lost its left hind plate at the 750 Metres.
Passing the 600 Metres, LIBERAL OF MIND was steadied when unable to maintain its position between SURROUNDED and KYNAM.
Near the 300 Metres, MARK TWO, which had been experiencing difficulty obtaining clear running, was shifted to the inside of HAPPY CENTENARY. After this, MARK TWO raced tight between BALTIC WARRIOR (C Reith) and HAPPY CENTENARY which shifted in marginally and then passing the 200 Metres was struck across the nose by the whip of C Reith.
A veterinary inspection of DRAGON FIGHTER immediately following the race revealed the horse to have bled from both nostrils.
A veterinary inspection of KYNAM and STREET CAT immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
DEMOKLES, WEALTHY FORTUNE and HAPPY CENTENARY were sent for sampling.
<23/6/2014 Additional Veterinary Reports>The Veterinary Officer reported that SURROUNDED was lame and sore in both front fetlocks on the morning after racing. Before being allowed to race again, SURROUNDED will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
