Racing Incident Report
CALIFORNIA SKY shifted out at the start and bumped GOLD MARQUIS which in turn shifted out and inconvenienced MERIDIAN GENIUS. After this, from a wide barrier, GOLD MARQUIS was steadied and shifted across behind runners.
From the outside barrier, STOCK LEGEND was steadied in the early stages to obtain cover.
Near the 1050 Metres, after being shifted to the inside of ASTROLOGER, TURIN WARRIOR raced tight inside that horse which got its head on the side and lay in when being ridden along.
Passing the 1000 Metres, STOCK LEGEND was checked when crowded for room inside GOLD MARQUIS (B Shinn) which, when being steadied to obtain cover behind DECISIVE TWELVE, got its head on the side and shifted in further. Whilst the Stewards accepted that the racing manners of GOLD MARQUIS at this time by laying in had contributed to this incident, nonetheless B Shinn was reprimanded and told to exercise due care when shifting ground to ensure that he does not cause interference to other runners.
Also passing the 1000 Metres, COLONEL got its head up when awkwardly placed close to the heels of JOLLY GOOD HEART.
Making the turn after the 600 Metres, TURIN WARRIOR raced tight inside ASTROLOGER which again got its head on the side and lay in. GOLD MARQUIS, which was following TURIN WARRIOR, made the turn after the 600 Metres awkwardly and shifted out towards the heels of DECISIVE TWELVE.
In the early part of the Straight, GOLD MARQUIS got its head on the side and lay in under pressure.
Throughout the race, H Z TOURBILLON (M F Poon) travelled very wide and without cover and rounding the Home Turn stumbled. After the race, M F Poon reported that after stumbling, he became concerned regarding the action of H Z TOURBILLON and for this reason he eased the horse down in the Home Straight. A veterinary inspection of H Z TOURBILLON immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. Before being allowed to race again, H Z TOURBILLON will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial around a bend and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
Throughout the race, A SMILE LIKE YOURS also travelled wide and without cover.
When questioned, C Y Ho stated that he was instructed to obtain a midfield position with cover on DECISIVE TWELVE as it was considered that tonight’s race would be run at a good tempo given that there were a number of runners engaged which have previously taken up forward positions in their races. He said in accordance with his instructions he steadied DECISIVE TWELVE in the early stages to obtain cover behind ASTROLOGER which was being ridden along after the 1100 Metres. He said DECISIVE TWELVE travelled keenly for some distance after the 1000 Metres, however, settled better after the 800 Metres. He added that DECISIVE TWELVE, a horse which he knows well, appeared to be reluctant to race amongst runners tonight as the horse did not want to stretch out rounding the Home Turn when racing between TURIN WARRIOR and CALIFORNIA SKY. He said because of DECISIVE TWELVE’s reluctance to stretch out when racing in amongst horses, he believed that this was the reason for the horse’s failure to finish the race off. Mr W Y So, the trainer of DECISIVE TWELVE, will be interviewed regarding the instructions provided to Jockey Ho tonight prior to the Sha Tin racemeeting to be conducted on Sunday, 30 January 2022.
After the race, K Teetan stated that CALIFORNIA SKY, which was having only its second race start in Hong Kong tonight, raced greenly throughout and after coming under pressure prior to the 500 Metres did not finish the race off as anticipated. A veterinary inspection of CALIFORNIA SKY immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
REWARDING TOGETHER and ASTROLOGER were sent for sampling.
<27/1/2022 Additional Veterinary Reports>CALIFORNIA SKY, which performed poorly, was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said at that time there were no significant findings. CALIFORNIA SKY was again examined by the Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer A S Cruz this morning. He said at this time he noted the horse to be lame in its left front leg. Before being allowed to race again, CALIFORNIA SKY will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
<30/01/2022 26 January 2022 Happy Valley Racemeeting – Race 9 (374)>The Stewards today questioned Mr W Y So, the trainer of DECISIVE TWELVE, regarding the tactics adopted in this race. Mr So explained that prior to the race he believed that it would be run at a very good tempo with horses which were drawn inside DECISIVE TWELVE such as JOLLY GOOD HEART and COLONEL engaged. He said he was concerned if use were made of DECISIVE TWELVE in the early stages to go forward and was then not able to show sufficient speed to cross runners to its inside, DECISIVE TWELVE would be left racing wide and without cover and further given the horse’s prior history of travelling keenly in its races would not be able to relax after being ridden along in the early stages. He said as DECISIVE TWELVE had run well when ridden from off the speed in the past, he elected, given the makeup of the field, to ride the horse in about a midfield position in the hope that it would be able to finish the race off. He added that he was disappointed with the performance of DECISIVE TWELVE in this race but felt that the horse travelling keenly in the middle stages may have been the reason for DECISIVE TWELVE’s failure to close the race off.
