Racing Incident Report
ONE STEP AHEAD jumped only fairly.
On jumping EASY LIFE was checked when crowded for room between ENCORE and BEAUTY NOVA which was also hampered when taken out by QUORUM.
SPICY SKEWER jumped awkwardly, brushed the right side of the barrier and shortly after made contact with ENCORE.
From wide barriers, ERNEST FEELING and ASIAN ONE were shifted across behind runners in the early stages.
Near the 1000 Metres, ENCORE got its head up and raced keenly when being steadied to obtain cover.
Passing the 800 Metres, QUORUM and BEAUTY NOVA made contact due to QUORUM racing tight to the inside of BEAUTY NOVA. As a result, both horses became unbalanced.
Rounding the Home Turn, PRINCE OF BON BON was bumped by HUNKY DORY which shifted to the outside of NOIR RIDER to improve.
Approaching the 350 Metres, ONE STEP AHEAD was shifted to the inside of CHIRON to continue into clear running. Then near the 250 Metres ONE STEP AHEAD became awkwardly placed close to the heels of NOIR RIDER and was then shifted to that runner’s outside to secure clear running. ONE STEP AHEAD was then disappointed for running between NOIR RIDER and CHIRON near the 200 Metres and over the concluding stages raced tight between CHIRON and HUNKY DORY and could not be fully ridden out to the finish.
Approaching the 300 Metres, QUORUM (L Hewitson) improved into a tight run between HUNKY DORY and PRINCE OF BON BON, resulting in QUORUM making contact with PRINCE OF BON BON and taking that runner out onto the hindquarters of SPICY SKEWER which became unbalanced when bumped by PRINCE OF BON BON. In this incident, PRINCE OF BON BON also became unbalanced when buffeted between QUORUM and SPICY SKEWER. L Hewitson was severely reprimanded and advised to ensure that there is sufficient racing room when improving into runs in future.
Near the 250 Metres, ENCORE was steadied to avoid the heels of SPICY SKEWER and was then shifted to the outside of that runner to continue into clear running.
After the race, Z Purton (BEAUTY NOVA) reported that after being hampered at the start he was obliged to ride his mount along in the early stages to hold a midfield positon. He said BEAUTY NOVA did not travel well at any stage of the event, was under pressure making the Home Turn and failed to run on in the Straight and raced in a disappointing manner. A veterinary inspection of BEAUTY NOVA immediately following the race which included an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse’s trachea. The performance of BEAUTY NOVA, favourite for today’s race, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, BEAUTY NOVA will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
SPICY SKEWER raced wide and without cover for the majority of the event.
EASY LIFE lost its left front plate after the race.
A veterinary inspection of ENCORE immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
BEAUTY NOVA, ERNEST FEELING and ASIAN ONE were sent for sampling.
<6/2/2023 Additional Veterinary Reports> ENCORE, which performed poorly, was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said at that time there were no significant findings. ENCORE was again examined by the Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer C S Shum this morning. He said at this time he noted the horse to be lame in its left front leg. Before being allowed to race again, ENCORE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
