Racing Incident Report
CALIFORNIA VANES was withdrawn on raceday morning by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (swollen right fore). Before being allowed to race again, CALIFORNIA VANES will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
On leaving the Parade Ring, FIERY DIAMOND was noted to have shortened its stride behind. FIERY DIAMOND was examined by the Veterinary Officer on arrival at the Start and after the necessary consultations was found to be suitable to race.
MAXIMUS jumped only fairly and shortly after the start was then crowded for room between LIKE THAT and MAN STAR, both of which shifted ground.
HIGH RISE SOLDIER was left racing wide and without cover after the 700 Metres.
From wide barriers, LIGHTNING BOLT and ROMAN TURBO were shifted across behind runners in the early stages.
Near the 800 Metres, HIGH RISE SOLDIER was steadied to avoid the heels of FIERY DIAMOND (C L Chau) which shifted in when not quite clear. C L Chau was reprimanded.
H Bentley (FLYING DRAGON) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that near the 700 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of HIGH RISE SOLDIER, resulting in that horse being checked and losing the running to which it was rightfully entitled. H Bentley was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence on Sunday, 19 February 2023 and to expire on Thursday, 23 February 2023 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). In assessing penalty, the Stewards took into account Jockey Bentley’s good race riding record.
LIGHTNING BOLT lost its right front plate near the 500 Metres.
CZARSON was held up for clear running from the 350 Metres until near the 200 Metres when awkwardly placed behind HIGH RISE SOLDIER.
When questioned regarding his riding of LIGHTNING BOLT, H Bowman stated that whilst he had expected to race behind midfield, he had anticipated to be able to take up a slightly more forward position. He said with the good early pace, LIGHTNING BOLT settled towards the rear of the field and from the 600 Metres when he identified the favourite ELON to be racing in a position three wide, he started to endeavour to shift out and follow that runner. He added that near the 500 Metres he shifted out and made contact with STUNNING IMPACT in an attempt to trail ELON, however, when his mount made contact with that runner, it became unbalanced and awkwardly placed on the heels of CZARSON. He said as a result he then elected to shift back to the inside to secure clear running and near the 250 Metres commenced to improve between MAN STAR and LIKE THAT, however, when LIKE THAT shifted out away from MAXIMUS, this resulted in the run closing and LIGHTNING BOLT becoming held up for clear running. He further added that LIGHTNING BOLT was then held up on the heels of MAN STAR and was unable to shift out to secure clear running when positioned inside the heels of HIGH RISE SOLDIER and as a consequence LIGHTNING BOLT was not able to be tested until the concluding stages when it secured a narrow run between HIGH RISE SOLDIER and MAN STAR. After considering the explanation provided by H Bowman, the Stewards found that the tactics he adopted were reasonable in the circumstances.
LIGHTNING BOLT, FLYING DRAGON and FIERY DIAMOND were sent for sampling.
