Race:1 (597) DEAUVILLE AUGUST YEARLING SALES HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 5 1200 m

EXTRA SPECIAL was slow to begin. TREASURABLE and MOUNT SURPLUS bumped at the start. MOUNT SURPLUS then shifted in and bumped MAGIC PRACTITIONER which made heavy contact with WINNING AHEAD which shifted out shortly after the start. From the outside barrier, MARVELLOUS was taken across behind runners shortly after the start. When being steadied near the 900 Metres, DESCARTES got its head up and proved difficult to settle. SUGAR ON TOP was held up for clear running in the early part of the Straight and near the 200 Metres was disappointed for running between MIGHTY WINNER and WINNING AHEAD. After this, SUGAR ON TOP was awkwardly placed close to the heels of MIGHTY WINNER which shifted out slightly and because of this had to be checked. SUGAR ON TOP then again had difficulty obtaining clear running between MIGHTY WINNER and WINNING AHEAD for the remainder of the race and close to the finishing line was awkwardly placed close to the heels of MIGHTY WINNER. Because of this, SUGAR ON TOP was not ridden out to the end of the race as it normally would be. MAGIC PRACTITIONER was not able to obtain clear running until the 200 Metres and then over the final 100 Metres was again held up when racing behind TREASURABLE and inside ASALI VICTORY. Because of this, MAGIC PRACTITIONER was not properly tested. Inside the 100 Metres, the whip of O Doleuze (DESCARTES) was knocked from his grasp by the whip of M Du Plessis (TREASURABLE). Throughout the race, both MOUNT SURPLUS and NOBLE ZOOM travelled wide and without cover. When questioned, B Prebble stated that after viewing the recent runs of ASALI VICTORY, he formed the opinion that use had been made of the horse to race in a forward position and consequently it has not finished off its races. He therefore recommended to ASALI VICTORY’s connections tonight that he ride the horse more quietly as, in his opinion, there was considerable speed drawn to his inside and were ASALI VICTORY to be ridden in a forward position, too much use would have to be made of the horse to cross runners or in the alternative it would be left racing wide. He said ASALI VICTORY’s connections agreed that the horse should be ridden more quietly tonight in the hope that it would be able to finish off the race. He said in the Straight when commencing to close off the race strongly, ASALI VICTORY got its head on the side, hung in and proved very difficult to ride. He said were it not for this fact, he believed ASALI VICTORY would have obtained a more prominent position at the end of the race. Trainer C S Shum confirmed that himself and the owners of ASALI VICTORY had agreed with Jockey Prebble that ASALI VICTORY should be ridden more quietly tonight and advised the Stewards that he himself had concerns that ASALI VICTORY would not be able to finish off the race if ridden in a forward position due to the anticipated solid tempo. A veterinary inspection of MOUNT SURPLUS after the race did not show any significant findings. WINNING AHEAD, MIGHTY WINNER and CHAIN WIN were sent for sampling. After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that WINNING AHEAD was lame in the right front leg and that ASALI VICTORY had sustained a cut to the right front cannon. Before being allowed to race again, WINNING AHEAD and ASALI VICTORY will both be subjected to an official veterinary examination.

Race:2 (598) ARQANA HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 4 1200 m

VALUE CHOICE was slow to begin. BLINK AGAIN shifted in at the start and bumped KING CREOLE. For some distance in the early part of the Straight, KING CREOLE was awkwardly placed close to the heels of STAR LEGEND. Throughout the race, FORTUNE PUG travelled wide and without cover. When questioned, Apprentice M L Yeung stated that he had been instructed to ride NOT QUITE PERFECT in a midfield position from barrier 12 if possible. He said in the early stages of the race he shifted across behind POWER AND GOLD and then making the first turn when racing four wide outside of BLINK AGAIN was obliged to come back further in order to obtain a position closer to the running rail. He said after the 1000 Metres after obtaining a position on the fence, NOT QUITE PERFECT came off the bit and because of this near the 800 Metres he immediately commenced riding the horse along to have it improve its position. He said then in the Straight NOT QUITE PERFECT finished off the race only fairly. He added, due to the circumstances of the race in the early stages, he was not able to ride NOT QUITE PERFECT in a midfield position and the horse raced further back than had been intended. Trainer A Lee stated that on every occasion when NOT QUITE PERFECT had been successful, it had drawn inside gates. He said he felt that if NOT QUITE PERFECT was pushed along early to overcome its wide barrier, the horse would not be able to finish off the race. He said he had hoped that NOT QUITE PERFECT would be able to obtain a midfield position with cover, however, appreciated that this may have been difficult given that the horse had drawn barrier 12. He added that although NOT QUITE PERFECT raced further back than had been hoped, he will not make use of the horse from wide draws in future as it had demonstrated in the past that it was not able to finish off the race when ridden along in the early stages. Mr Lee was advised that his explanation would be recorded and that the Stewards expect that NOT QUITE PERFECT would be ridden in a consistent manner in the future where circumstances permit. A veterinary inspection of ANDIAMO, which finished tailed out, after the race revealed that the horse was displaying an irregular heart rhythm. Before being allowed to race again, ANDIAMO will be required to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. WINDICATOR RETURNS and MY TIME were sent for sampling.

Race:3 (599) EQUIDIA RACING CHANNEL HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 4 (Special Condition) 1200 m

LINKED WIN and SONOFTHEWEST were slow to begin. At the start, FORTUNE SPIRIT was crowded for room between KIMBER FORTUNE and GLENEALY VIKING which shifted in. After this, FORTUNE SPIRIT was taken across behind runners. Near the 450 Metres, BRILLIANT ONE was checked away from the heels of SUNSHINE BOY. Both FORTUNE SPIRIT and KIMBER FORTUNE had difficulty obtaining clear running in the early part of the Straight. Passing the 250 Metres, WHITE DRAGON, which was giving ground, was crowded for room between BRILLIANT ONE and SUNSHINE BOY which, after shifting out and making contact with WHITE DRAGON, became unbalanced and shifted out further. For some distance prior to the 200 Metres, LINKED WIN was held up for clear running. Throughout the race, WHITE DRAGON travelled wide and without cover. When questioned regarding his riding of GLENEALY VIKING, M W Leung stated that he had been instructed by Trainer D J Hall to ride the horse positively in the early stages as it is a nervous type which has displayed a tendency to be reluctant to stretch out when following other horses in track work. He said it was also pointed out to him that horses ridden on the speed in the opening two races of the programme had been successful and therefore it was felt that GLENEALY VIKING would be best suited by being able to take up a position as close to the lead as possible. He said accordingly he rode GLENEALY VIKING along vigorously in the early stages. He said approaching the first turn he was racing outside the heels of FUN in a position wide on the track and he had WHITE DRAGON, which had drawn to his outside, being ridden to obtain a forward position. He said due to the instructions to be positive on GLENEALY VIKING, he did not consider attempting to obtain a position behind FUN, but rather he continued to stride forward in the hope that FUN would take him across into a position closer to the fence. He said on entering the Back Straight FUN was left racing four wide, therefore he elected to continue to ride GLENEALY VIKING along in the hope of obtaining a position closer to the fence rather than covering unnecessary ground. He said after racing forward of FUN near the 700 Metres, that horse was shifted in to a position on the fence passing the 600 Metres, therefore he allowed GLENEALY VIKING to maintain the position one off the fence to the outside of FUN. Mr Hall confirmed that he had instructed M W Leung to ride GLENEALY VIKING positively as it had been reported to him by those riders that had ridden the horse in track work, principally his assistant trainer, that GLENEALY VIKING was reluctant to stretch out when behind other horses. He said that GLENEALY VIKING, which was having its first start for his stable tonight, has not been in his stable all that long and he was unsure how much speed the horse possessed. He said it also appeared to him that the track was favouring horses ridden in forward positions and this fact, combined with the advice that he had received from the riders of the horse in track work, he believed that it would be best for GLENEALY VIKING to be ridden in a positive manner so that it would race more genuinely. After viewing the videos, M W Leung conceded that an opportunity existed for GLENEALY VIKING to obtain cover behind runners near the 900 Metres. Mr Hall stated that he also believed the option was available for M W Leung to position GLENEALY VIKING behind runners near the 900 Metres, however, he felt that from barrier 11, given the instructions he had provided Jockey Leung, that he was satisfied as to the reasons for GLENEALY VIKING to be continually ridden into a forward position. M W Leung was advised that his riding of GLENEALY VIKING, particularly his decision not to obtain cover behind runners when the opportunity existed near the 900 Metres, had come under notice and his riding of the horse for such a prolonged period meant that GLENEALY VIKING would not be able to finish off the race. He was also advised that, in the opinion of the Stewards, his riding of GLENEALY VIKING was not up to the standard of a senior rider in Hong Kong and lacked the necessary level of judgement and initiative. M W Leung was further advised that at all times he must ride his horses in such a manner so as to allow them to be able to finish off the race where circumstances permit. A veterinary inspection of FUN after the race did not show any significant findings. NATURAL FLAME, BRILLIANT ONE and FORTUNE SPIRIT were sent for sampling.

Race:4 (600) ARC DE TRIOMPHE CHAMPIONSHIPS HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 4 1650 m

BUMPER STRIKE was withdrawn on 11.5.10 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame right fore) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter CHATER DE LAGO (W C Marwing). Before being allowed to race again, BUMPER STRIKE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. On arrival at the Start, it was noted that KING GALILEO had lost its left front plate. KING GALILEO was replated and examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. MAGIC TURBO was slow to begin. From the outside barrier, ROCKET AND GOLD was taken across behind runners shortly after the start. In the early and middle stages, THE UNTOUCHABLELAD was left racing wide and without cover and near the 800 Metres was allowed to stride forward. A veterinary inspection of DIVINE KID after the race did not show any significant findings. THE UNTOUCHABLELAD and UNIQUE SPEED were sent for sampling.

Race:5 (601) LONGCHAMP RACECOURSE HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 3 1000 m

BROTHERS IN ARMS was withdrawn on 11.5.10 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame right fore) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter CHINA DRAGON (B Prebble). MULTIPROUD was withdrawn on raceday morning by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (substantial amount of mucopus in trachea on scoping after track work). Before being allowed to race again, BROTHERS IN ARMS and MULTIPROUD will both be subjected to an official veterinary examination. LUCKY FOLLOW ME and LUCKY RED were slow to begin. LUCKY ARMY was slow to begin and shortly after the start was checked when crowded for room between GO LEGEND GO and CHEVALIER KING which shifted in. Making the first turn near the 550 Metres, ETERNAL BEAUTY got its head on the side and hung out badly despite the efforts of its rider, Apprentice K W Leung. FLY HIGH and OUR PEGASUS, which were racing outside of ETERNAL BEAUTY, were carried very wide and LUCKY RED, which was following those horses, was checked and taken wider. The racing manners of ETERNAL BEAUTY were considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, ETERNAL BEAUTY will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in an official barrier trial around a bend. Rounding the Home Turn, GOLD WINNER hung out. When GOLD WINNER hung out, DIAMOND KNIGHT, which was racing behind that horse, improved to its inside after straightening. For some distance between the 250 Metres and the 150 Metres, DIAMOND KNIGHT then raced in restricted room inside GOLD WINNER which shifted in slightly under pressure. In the Straight, ETERNAL BEAUTY got its head on the side and hung in. When questioned regarding his riding of GO LEGEND GO, Apprentice M L Yeung stated that after balancing the horse at the entrance to the Straight, he commenced to ride the horse out and near the 200 Metres pulled the whip on it. He said in the Straight GO LEGEND GO raced somewhat greenly and the horse was inclined to shift out under pressure. He said for this reason he used the whip only sparingly in the run to the line. Apprentice Yeung was advised that his riding of the horse in the Straight had come under notice and he should ride his mounts in such a fashion as to leave no room for query. After the race, B Prebble reported that when being ridden out in the Straight, CHINA DRAGON was reluctant to stretch out. Before being allowed to race again, CHINA DRAGON will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. A veterinary inspection of CHINA DRAGON and OUR PEGASUS after the race did not show any significant findings. CHEVALIER KING and ETERNAL BEAUTY were sent for sampling.

Race:6 (602) LE FRENCH MAY TROPHY (HANDICAP) (Sec1) Class 3 1200 m

On arrival at the Start, it was noted that MR VIGOROUS had a discharge from the right nostril. MR VIGOROUS was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. From a wide barrier, HIGH RETURN was taken across behind runners shortly after the start. Shortly after the start, CHATER POWER was steadied when crowded for room between SOLDIER which shifted out slightly and BONDI LAD which got its head on the side and shifted in. Near the 1000 Metres, HIGH RETURN was steadied away from the heels of BEAUTIFUL DREAMER which shifted in when barely clear. At the 1000 Metres, SOARING RIVER was checked when crowded for room inside CONFUCIUS CLASSIC which was taken in by SOLDIER which at this time was taken in by MR VIGOROUS which, despite the efforts of its rider, M W Leung, shifted ground. M W Leung was advised whilst the Stewards were comfortable he had made sufficient effort to prevent his mount from shifting ground, he would be expected in similar circumstances to do his utmost to prevent his horses from shifting ground, thereby prevent interference to other runners to his inside. After the 200 Metres, PERFECT GEAR was held up for clear running after being disappointed for running between GOLDEN BAUHINIA and SUPER CAGA. After this, PERFECT GEAR was not able to obtain clear running and consequently was not tested. Near the 150 Metres, SOARING RIVER raced tight between HIGH RETURN and PERFECT GEAR which shifted out in an attempt to find clear running. When questioned, B Prebble stated that approaching the 800 Metres FREE AND EASY commenced to over-race badly, got its head up and proved very difficult to settle. He said that after this point he attempted to have the horse race more tractably which it commenced to do passing the 700 Metres. He said as FREE AND EASY was racing more generously, he elected to allow MR VIGOROUS to shift in from a three wide position to race in front of FREE AND EASY approaching the 600 Metres rather than ride FREE AND EASY along to maintain its position to the inside of that horse. He said he felt that if he were to ride FREE AND EASY along to hold its position, the horse would again commence to over-race and this would not be in the horse’s best interests. M W Leung was fined $3,000 for improper use of the whip in that he raised weal marks over MR VIGOROUS’ right hindquarter. A veterinary inspection of BONDI LAD after the race did not show any significant findings. FREE AND EASY, SUPER CAGA and HIGH RETURN were sent for sampling. After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that FREE AND EASY had lost its right front plate.

Race:7 (603) THE FRANCE GALOP CUP (HANDICAP) (Sec1) Class 1 1000 m

After being loaded, ELITE OF CHIU TON sat down with its left hind leg being caught under the adjacent gate. ELITE OF CHIU TON was removed from the stalls and examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion it was not suitable to race. Acting on this advice, the Stewards ordered the withdrawal of ELITE OF CHIU TON. Before being allowed to race again, ELITE OF CHIU TON will be required to perform satisfactorily in a stalls test and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. Shortly after the start, ALWAYS SOMETHING was checked when crowded for room between LOYAL ARMY which itself raced tight inside FRIENDLY GAINS and HONGKONG SUPERSTAR which got its head on the side and shifted out. For some distance approaching the 200 Metres, ALWAYS SOMETHING was checked away from the heels of the tiring BLAZE KING. Throughout the race, BULLISH KING and NO MORE GREEN travelled wide and without cover. WINE WIN also travelled three wide and without cover throughout. A veterinary inspection of BLAZE KING after the race did not show any significant findings. HOLEY DOLLAR and FRIENDLY GAINS were sent for sampling.

Race:8 (604) FRENCH RACING & BREEDING COMMITTEE HANDICAP (Sec1) Class 3 1650 m

LEO’S PRIDE was slow to begin. When the gates opened, TRAVEL GUIDE, which was leaning against the inside gate of its stall, began awkwardly and lost ground. For some distance approaching the 1200 Metres, TEAM WORK was awkwardly placed close to the heels of VICTORY STYLE. Passing the 1000 Metres, MASTER GUNNER got its head up and proved difficult to settle when being checked away from the heels of HURRICANE DASH. HURRICANE DASH raced keenly in the middle stages. In the early part of the Straight, VICTORY STYLE was held up for clear running and near the 200 Metres was shifted to the outside of TRAVEL GUIDE after being disappointed for running between that horse and REGENCY KINGDOM. After this, VICTORY STYLE raced in restricted room inside WHATABOB until the concluding stages. Throughout the race, ABSOLUTE HEDGE travelled wide and without cover. Whilst the Stewards were satisfied that J Lloyd’s riding of MASTER GUNNER, 6th placegetter, in close proximity to the winning post did not affect the horse’s placing, he was nonetheless reminded of his obligation to ride his mounts out to the end of the race where circumstances permit. A veterinary inspection of ABSOLUTE HEDGE after the race did not show any significant findings. A veterinary inspection of LEO’S PRIDE after the race including an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of mucopus in the horse’s trachea. VICTORY STYLE, HURRICANE DASH and TRAVEL GUIDE were sent for sampling.
