Background:
Christophe Lemaire is one of the leading riders based in Japan. While his only major JRA title this season is with Stars on Earth in the Japanese Oaks, he has been runner-up in four other G1 events. Meanwhile, he has accomplished remarkable success overseas winning five Group races, four of which he won in a single night in the Neom Turf Cup (Authority), 1351 Turf Sprint (Songline), Red Sea Turf Handicap (Stay Foolish) and Riyadh Dirt Sprint (Dancing Prince) on Saudi Cup night. On Dubai World Cup night, he won the G2 Dubai Gold Cup (Stay Foolish). He leapt to prominence in 2004 thanks to his partnership with the brilliant French champion filly Divine Proportions and two years later he rode the crack mare Pride to win the Champion Stakes and Hong Kong Cup. Other top class winners in those days include Stacelita, Makfi, Flotilla and Elusive Wave, while Dunaden carried him to a Melbourne Cup win in 2011. In November 2016, he equalled the record of Yutaka Take for most wins at a single Japanese meeting with eight victories. He rewrote a number of JRA records in 2018, surpassing legendary Yutaka Take’s long-standing records with 215 annual wins, eight annual G1 titles and annual earnings of JPY4.66 billion.
