Background:
Raised in a racing family, Ben Thompson is the son of Jason Thompson, one Australia’s greatest greyhound trainers. Thompson began riding in 2012 at the age of 15 as an apprentice in Victoria – his home state. He served his apprenticeship with Mick Kent and then Allen Williams before relocating to the state of Queensland in 2020. Thompson’s career elevated to new heights following the move and he won the 2023 Oakleigh Plate aboard the Queensland-trained Uncommon James at Sandown. He also won the lucrative Magic Millions Cup aboard Vinco that same year. Closing in on 800 career wins, Thompson has won races in Singapore, the United Arab Emirates and New Zealand as well across Australia. He won seven races throughout a short-term stint last season in Hong Kong.
