Racing Incident Report
ABSOLUTE left the gates awkwardly, shifted in and brushed the hindquarters of KEY LARGO. Running to the first turn, LUCKY MEANINGS was momentarily awkward between MULTI-WINNER and SUNNY DAY which shifted out away from HERO'S CHOICE. Approaching and rounding the Home Turn, RARE COLLECTION hung out. The Stewards overruled an objection lodged by W Woods, the rider of WINWIN COMBINATION, which finished 4th, against KEY LARGO (D Whyte) being declared the winner. W Woods had alleged interference to his mount after the 200 Metres. It was established that whilst KEY LARGO did shift out after the 200 Metres when disappointed for running inside HERO'S CHOICE and did make contact with WINWIN COMBINATION and to some extent inconvenienced that horse, bearing in mind the distance between the two horses, the fact that KEY LARGO had come from behind WINWIN COMBINATION after the 200 Metres and further bearing in mind that HERO'S CHOICE had shifted away from the running rail and clearly attributed to any contact that did occur between KEY LARGO and WINWIN COMBINATION. All these factors in the opinion of the Stewards did not justify an alteration to the Judge's placings. Accordingly the placings as semaphored were confirmed. It was subsequently established that approaching the 200 Metres KEY LARGO was checked and shifted out when disappointed for running inside HERO'S CHOICE which after shifting away from the rail shifted back towards it to be racing in a position almost right on the rail. Shortly after being checked, KEY LARGO shifted to improve between HERO'S CHOICE and WINWIN COMBINATION where initially there was insufficient room to do so. As KEY LARGO continued to go forward, HERO'S CHOICE shifted out to be at least two wide. D Whyte was told competitive riding is expected from senior riders in Hong Kong, but tonight had HERO'S CHOICE not shifted as it clearly did, such riding as he displayed on KEY LARGO could have been in breach of quite a serious rule. He was told at times when in a legitimate pocket it might be that he would have to stay there. Near the 200 Metres, Apprentice Y T Cheng (RARE COLLECTION) momentarily dropped his near side rein. About the 200 Metres, SUNNY DAY was steadied and shifted out to avoid MULTI-WINNER which was giving ground. When asked about the improved performance of KEY LARGO today particularly when compared with its performance at Sha Tin last Saturday, Mr D Hill, Trainer, said at Sha Tin KEY LARGO was running in a Class 4 race, even though was carrying more weight tonight was better suited in this grade. He also said KEY LARGO is getting on in years, the horse is having joint trouble and in his opinion the ground at Happy Valley is more suitable for KEY LARGO than that at Sha Tin. He said for some time he has been endeavouring to convince the connections that KEY LARGO is better suited at Happy Valley and they therefore conceded to his request to run the horse tonight. Mr Hill said the horse was ridden by an Apprentice at its last run, but D Whyte had ridden with success for the owners previously and he is anxious to maintain the connection with another horse in the stable owned by the same people. Mr Hill assured the Stewards that he has done nothing different so far as the work of KEY LARGO was concerned and at best he gave the horse an outside chance tonight and was surprised with the manner in which it found the line. He did conclude by saying if possible at least for the near future he will endeavour to race KEY LARGO as much as possible at Happy Valley. The explanations submitted by Mr Hill were considered to be acceptable. W M Lai (HERO'S CHOICE) said today from a good gate he had been instructed by the Trainer to try and ride the horse in a forward position and endeavour to avoid trouble in running. An inquiry into the reason for STERLING CHANCE being checked after the 100 Metres was adjourned until next Saturday, 10 March 2001 at the Sha Tin Race Course. LUCKY MEANINGS was sent for clinical veterinary examination and routine testing.
