Racing Incident Report

BEST NEWS was slow to begin. TEAM TONIC was slightly slow to begin and shortly afterwards was steadied when crowded by SPEEDY FORWARD which shifted in. TRY YOUR BEST and HOI POLLOI bumped. Making the first turn, FURIOSO was checked and HOI POLLOI was crowded for room when GO FOR GIN (Apprentice M W Leung) shifted in momentarily. In the circumstances, the Stewards did not take any direct action, but advised Apprentice M W Leung that he should exercise more care. On the first turn, TRY YOUR BEST was steadied to avoid FLORAL CHEERS which shifted in. After the 1200 Metres, FURIOSO got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of GO FOR GIN. At the 600 Metres, TRY YOUR BEST and GO FOR GIN bumped as TRY YOUR BEST endeavoured to shift out to go forward. At the 200 Metres, TRY YOUR BEST was steadied to avoid the heels of FLORAL CHEERS when disappointed for a run between that horse and SPEEDY FORWARD. Apprentice Y T Cheng (SINCERELY YOURS) said he had been instructed from the outside barrier to ride the horse midfield and if possible with cover. He said the horse began well, then because of the slow early pace would not settle and raced further forward than he intended. He said at no stage was he able to get cover, consequently the horse did not finish the race off. He agreed in hindsight, bearing in mind the slow early pace, it would have been better had he allowed SINCERELY YOURS to go forward and lead, however, he did not do so because of what he considered to be specific riding instructions. D Harrison (FLORAL CHEERS) said he had been advised by the Trainer that the horse can be difficult to settle and for this reason he should, if possible, endeavour to obtain a trail behind the leader. He said in accordance with these instructions approaching the first turn he steadied and shifted in to a position behind QUI VIVRA VERRA in preference to remain outside that horse in the lead. TRY YOUR BEST was sent for clinical veterinary examination and routine testing.
