Racing Incident Report
When the gates opened, HOLY QUEST bounded in the air and was then further inconvenienced by LION ROCK which on jumping shifted in. FAIR LADY was slowly away. PO ON WIN jumped awkwardly with its head up and shifted out. S King (PO ON WIN) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding. The careless riding being that near the 900 Metres he allowed his mount to shift in when not clear of LUCKY SUPERSTAR. As a result of this, LUCKY SUPERSTAR was taken onto LION ROCK which in turn shifted ground, causing HONOUR GRADE to lose running to which it was rightfully entitled and be severely checked. When HONOUR GRADE checked, WINNING ASSOCIATES and HOLY QUEST which were following were checked in consequence. After considering all the circumstances of this case and the submissions put in relation to a penalty by S King, the Stewards decided that the appropriate penalty was for his licence to ride in races be suspended until Thursday, 31 May 2001 on which day he may resume race riding (3 Hong Kong race days). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Sha Tin meeting next Sunday, 20 May 2001. Approaching and rounding the Home Turn, PO ON WIN hung out badly and HOLY QUEST hung out. Just after the 400 Metres, MY JOY was steadied when disappointed for running between PO ON WIN which was inclined to be hanging out away from SIROCCO and ARROGANCE which initially shifted in itself, but was then taken in slightly by SUPREME STAR. In view of all the circumstances, no action was taken. Rounding the turn and in the Straight, FAIR LADY hung in badly and at about the 400 Metres was awkward on the heels of WINNING ASSOCIATES. About the 100 Metres, PO ON WIN, which was giving ground, was checked when crowded for room between LION ROCK which had improved on its inside and ARROGANCE (E Saint-Martin) which momentarily shifted in. It was decided no direct action could be taken, but E Saint-Martin was reprimanded and told he must exercise more care. The Stewards deferred the declaration of Weighed-In. They were of the prima facie view that ASHKANESSA may not have had a fair start. After viewing all the available video films and receiving a report from the Starter, it was clearly established that when the gates opened ASHKANESSA stood flat-footed and refused to jump away. Accordingly the Stewards did not consider in this situation it was necessary to invoke their powers under Rule 28(ix) which deals with horses having had an unfair start. ASHKANESSA was deemed to be a starter. Before the horse can race again, it will have to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial. LUCKY SUPERSTAR was sent for clinical veterinary examination and routine testing. After the race, it was noted that HONOUR GRADE had sustained a laceration to its near side thigh. Following the race, the Veterinary Surgeon reported that SIROCCO had sustained an abrasion to its off side hind cannon. He said the horse in his opinion at the time of the inspection was not lame nor was the leg showing any signs of swelling.
