Racing Incident Report

After arriving at the gates, D Whyte (EMPIRE COURT) expressed concern with the manner in which the horse was moving. EMPIRE COURT was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon, trotted up who then consulted with D Whyte and it was decided that EMPIRE COURT was suitable to race. On jumping, HONEST STEED was crowded for room between CLEVER CITATION and CITY FORTUNE which shifted out. REPUTATION was slowly away. Turning out of the Straight the first time, KOWLOON JAZZ became unbalanced when momentarily crowded by HONEST STEED. Apprentice S K Sit (CITY FORTUNE) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding. The careless riding being that just after the winning post the first time, he allowed his mount to shift in when not clear of EMPIRE COURT. As a consequence of this, that horse was taken in and unnecessary crowding was caused to LUCKY VICTORIES and INVENTOR. After taking into account all the circumstances, the submissions put by Apprentice S K Sit and his race riding record this season, it was decided the appropriate penalty was that he be suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Monday, 18 June 2001 on which day he may resume race riding (6 Hong Kong race days). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the meeting at Sha Tin next Saturday, 26 May 2001. About the 1300 Metres, SPECTACULAR TALK was checked and INVENTOR was crowded for room when LUCKY VICTORIES was taken in by EMPIRE COURT which got its head on the side and shifted in slightly away from ON FIRE. Because of all the circumstances, the Stewards were unable to attribute responsibility to any rider or riders and therefore no action was taken. At about the 1200 Metres, EMPIRE COURT was taken out by LUCKY VICTORIES which was pulling and shifted ground. During this incident EMPIRE COURT struck the heels of ON FIRE and knuckled. The occurrence in the opinion of the Stewards was accidental. D Whyte (EMPIRE COURT) explained after this incident the horse seemed to drop the bit, did not travel well for the rest of the race and was a well beaten horse a long way out. He said in the Straight he was concerned with the action of EMPIRE COURT and did not ride the horse right out to the line as he normally would. Before racing again, EMPIRE COURT will be required to pass an official veterinary examination. In the early and middle stages, ON FIRE was obliged to race wide without any cover and was inclined to throw its head about. For some distance rounding the Home Turn, HONEST STEED was held up behind EMPIRE COURT. To obtain running on straightening, HONEST STEED was shifted in. When questioned, J Egan (INVENTOR) said he had been asked to ride the horse in a forward position and after being crowded a number of times in the early stages INVENTOR travelled satisfactorily, but in the Straight gave ground abruptly and was very disappointing in the run to the line. He said in hindsight it may have been better to have ridden INVENTOR quieter. Before racing again, INVENTOR will be required to pass an official veterinary examination. INVENTOR and EMPIRE COURT were sent for clinical veterinary examination and routine testing.
