Racing Incident Report

After being boxed, GOLDEN YEARS became fractious, reared and was momentarily cast. The horse was released from the gates, examined by the Veterinary Surgeon and on his advice was withdrawn by order of the Stewards. GOLDEN SPIRIT was also released and examined. The Veterinary Surgeon reported that in his opinion it was suitable to race. Before being allowed to race again, GOLDEN YEARS will be required to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial. RUN AND WIN left the gates awkwardly and shifted in. On jumping CHATER JADE was momentarily crowded between RUN AND WIN and GOLDEN SPIRIT which shifted out. SPLENDID PATROL was slowly away. Rounding the turn and in the Straight, SPRING FOUNTAIN hung out rather badly. Approaching the 200 Metres, SPLENDID PATROL bumped the hindquarters of SPRING FOUNTAIN. About the 200 Metres, LION ROCK was momentarily awkward just inside the hindquarters of SUPER FORCE. E Saint-Martin (GOLDEN SPIRIT) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)]. The careless riding being that after the 200 Metres he permitted his mount to shift out when not clear of SUPER FORCE. As a consequence of this, SUPER FORCE lost the running to which it was rightfully entitled and was checked. In all the circumstances of this matter, taking into account particularly the guilty plea, the general demeanour and attitude of Jockey Saint-Martin, the Stewards believed in this case the appropriate penalty was for his licence to ride in races be suspended for a period to expire on Thursday 17 January 2002 on which day he may resume race riding (4 Hong Kong race days). The suspension will take immediate effect. R Fradd (SUPER FORCE) pleaded guilty to a charge of having misconducted himself [Rule 155(5)] in that after checking SUPER FORCE near the 200 Metres, the gestures he made towards Jockey Saint-Martin were inappropriate. For this breach of the Rule, he was fined $10,000. When asked about the improved performance of SPLENDID PATROL, Mr T P Wong, trainer, said the horse had been very busy last season having almost 20 starts. He said at the end of last year SPLENDID PATROL was tired and early this season its form had continued to be mediocre. He said after the horse ran poorly at Happy Valley on 31 October 2001, he gave it a rest and then after the good run on the All Weather Track on 26 December 2001, he had done very little work with the horse, restricting the work to one canter only. He did say the intention was to have SPLENDID PATROL in a forward position today as is its customary, but when it missed the start it might have been some help which was clearly not planned. Mr Wong concluded by saying had SPLENDID PATROL raced towards the front today and not performed, the intention was to ride the horse quietly at its next run. The explanations submitted were accepted.
