Racing Incident Report
CHEROKEE EXPRESS was withdrawn on 18.4.02 on veterinary grounds (inappetance). MUNDAHISH left the gates very awkwardly and shifted out abruptly, as a consequence of this, C Williams momentarily lost the use of his near side iron. CHINA WORLD missed the start slightly and was then checked quite severely as a result of MUNDAHISH shifting out. SPORT SEEKER jumped awkwardly with its head up. Throughout the event, BACCHUS raced greenly, hung out and proved very difficult to ride. The Stewards deferred the declaration of weighed-in. They were of the prima facie view that the official video contained evidence which cast sufficient doubt on whether BACCHUS (F Coetzee) should be declared 2nd placegetter. They decided there was justification to have the matter resolved formally and openly at a hearing where they would not only have the advantage of hearing all the evidence but also the opportunity of viewing the video in the light of that evidence. Therefore the matter was resolved formally in a protest/objection hearing (Rule 123). Following the conduct of that formal hearing, the Stewards on all the available evidence were of the opinion that whilst BACCHUS had shifted out over about the last 300 Metres, it had caused interference to MASTER YING, the material extent of which in the opinion of the Stewards exceeded the short head margin between the two runners at the finish. They considered had the interference which clearly did take place not occurred, MASTER YING would have finished ahead of BACCHUS. Accordingly they placed BACCHUS immediately behind MASTER YING [Rule 101(2)] and amended the placings to become 1st GOOD LAD, 2nd MASTER YING, 3rd BACCHUS, and 4th MULTIDANDY. H K Yim (MASTER YING) explained after the race he was unsure as to whether he had sufficient grounds to formally object. However, he did say he was aware the inquiry sign had been posted. H K Yim was told if at any time he is in doubt as to whether he has grounds to object, he should seek permission to view the official videos before weighed-in is declared. BACCHUS was sent for clinical veterinary examination and testing. After the race, A Marcus (SUPER EXPRESSO) reported the horse was coughing on pulling up. The Veterinary Surgeon said SUPER EXPRESSO had bled from both nostrils. An endoscopic examination was carried out and this confirmed that SUPER EXPRESSO should be regarded as having suffered an official bleeding attack.
