Racing Incident Report

Whilst being saddled, SHINING GEM momentarily had its off side front leg caught over a partition behind the saddling stalls. The horse was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who discussed the matter with the trainer and it was then decided SHINING GEM was suitable to race. ZINEDINE left the gates awkwardly. Just after the start, TOM'S FIRST was crowded for room between PREMIER SPEED which shifted out and SALUZI which was taken in slightly by ZINEDINE. From a difficult gate, SHINING GEM was caught wide and was obliged to race wide without cover throughout. About the 400 Metres, DON CARLOS was steadied when awkward between the hindquarters of GREAT DRAGON and SHINING GEM. The Stewards deferred the declaration of weighed-in. They were of the prima facie view that an incident had occurred in the Straight which cast sufficient doubt on whether PREMIER SPEED (D Whyte) should be declared the winner of the race. They decided that there was justification to have the matter resolved formally and openly at a protest/objection hearing (Rule 123). F Coetzee, the rider of EXPLOSIVE POWER, second placegetter, also lodged a protest/objection against PREMIER SPEED being declared the winner alleging interference to his mount over about the last 200 Metres. Following the conduct of a formal hearing, the Stewards on all the available evidence were of the opinion that whilst PREMIER SPEED which was hanging out badly did shift ground over about the last 200 Metres and carried EXPLOSIVE POWER wider, they did not consider that EXPLOSIVE POWER would have finished ahead of PREMIER SPEED had that horse not shifted the ground which it clearly did. Accordingly the protest/objection was overruled and the Judge's placings as semaphored were confirmed. After the 100 Metres, REAL WINNER lost running and was steadied when crowded between SALUZI and EXPLOSIVE POWER which after being taken out by PREMIER SPEED got its head on the side and shifted abruptly away from that horse. In view of all the circumstances, it was decided no action should be taken. After the race, it was noted that NICE AND EASY was bleeding from both nostrils.
