Racing Incident Report

The Stewards interviewed Mr T K Ng, trainer of ETERNAL START, and E Saint-Martin regarding E Saint-Martin being declared to ride both RIVER OF CHINA and ETERNAL START. Mr Ng and E Saint-Martin acknowledged that they were both at fault in relation to this double engagement and accordingly each was fined $1,000. In the early stages, REAL DRAGON hung in badly. Then at about the 500 Metres, REAL DRAGON, which was continuing to race ungenerously, became unbalanced and was severely checked when awkwardly placed on the inside of HEAVENLY WIND. In the opinion of the Stewards, the occurrence was accidental. No action was taken. When REAL DRAGON checked, INSPIRED was checked as a consequence and this caused some inconvenience to BANK ON IT. About the 600 Metres, GRANVILLE ISLAND was steadied to avoid the heels of ETERNAL START (Apprentice K K Lai) which shifted in when not quite clear. Apprentice K K Lai was reprimanded and told he must exercise much more care. W M Lai (POPULAR CHOICE) said the horse was leaning on the side of the stall and he sought the assistance of an attendant to have the horse standing correctly. He went on to say however when the gates opened, POPULAR CHOICE came out very awkwardly, then was reluctant to stretch out in the early stages. Before POPULAR CHOICE can race again, it will be required to perform satisfactorily in a stalls test and must pass an official veterinary examination.
