Racing Incident Report

TOUCH OF CLASS, first Standby Declared Starter, was withdrawn on 15.6.02 on veterinary grounds (wound over its left eye). Prior to being saddled, ILIKETOSMILE had an adjustment made to its near front plate. HANDSOME DRAGON was slowly away. MEMBERS GLORY left the gates awkwardly with its head up, was then inconvenienced by I DELIVER which on jumping shifted in abruptly. For some time after this, MEMBERS GLORY raced very greenly and shifted a lot of ground. MY DELIGHT left the gates very awkwardly, threw its head about and shifted out abruptly, then hung out badly throughout. C Williams (ALARM CLOCK) said in the Straight he was very concerned with the horse's action and eased it down. After the race, ALARM CLOCK was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who said there was a significant amount of blood in the trachea and this was noted subsequent to an endoscopic examination. Before ALARM CLOCK can race again, it must perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and must pass an official veterinary examination. When questioned, D Whyte (HIDDEN DRAGON) said the intention had been to go forward from an outside gate and find a position somewhere on the speed. He said however just as the gates opened, HIDDEN DRAGON reared slightly, because of this lost ground and got well back. He said he endeavoured to find a position amongst other runners, but on the first turn HIDDEN DRAGON got its head up, hung out badly and proved very difficult for him to control. The explanations submitted were accepted. HIDDEN DRAGON was sent for clinical veterinary examination and testing.
