Racing Incident Report

SOLID CONTACT left the gates awkwardly, shifted in and bumped the hindquarters of CHARMING CITY. On jumping, GOLDEN YEARS sprawled. DANAMITE and CHINOOK were slowly away. In the early stages, THANK HEAVENS proved somewhat difficult to settle and several times threw its head about. About the 600 Metres, NORTHERN GOLD BALL and MERIDIAN STAR came together due mainly to NORTHERN GOLD BALL attempting to shift out. Then again on straightening, MERIDIAN STAR and NORTHERN GOLD BALL bumped as NORTHERN GOLD BALL tried to shift out, was not able to do so and was shifted in abruptly to find running. Over about the last 100 Metres, DANAMITE was not ridden out as it was running onto the hindquarters of VICTORY WARRIOR which was giving ground. SMART WINNER and SOLID CONTACT were sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. After the race, SMART WINNER and SOLID CONTACT were examined by the Veterinary Officer. No abnormalities were detected. THANK HEAVENS, CITIZEN KANE and GOLDEN YEARS were sent for sampling. THANK HEAVENS was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He noted the horse had an epiglottic entrapment (a breathing obstruction). Before THANK HEAVENS can race again, it must pass an official veterinary examination.
Additional Veterinary Report (released on 16 Dec. 2002) :
Dr Stewart has also advised when he examined MERIDIAN STAR at the stable of Trainer D A Hayes this morning, the horse was found to have inflammation in its left front tendon. Further investigation will be carried out by the stable Veterinary Surgeon. However, it has been decided before MERIDIAN STAR can race again, it must pass an official veterinary examination.
