Racing Incident Report

KEEN FLYER was withdrawn on race day morning on veterinary grounds (lame left hind leg). Before KEEN FLYER can race again, it will be required to pass an official veterinary examination. AMBITION began awkwardly, got its head up and shortly afterwards was bumped by BRILLIANT ATTORNEY which shifted out. GOOD LAD began awkwardly and bumped the outside gate of its stall. This caused D Dunn, its rider, to become unbalanced and lose the use of his right side iron for a short distance. HAPPY YEARS was slow to begin and then on jumping bumped the inside gate of its stall. BEARCAT made solid contact with the outside gate of its stall on jumping out. BRAVE KNIGHT knuckled at the start and as a consequence lost ground. Over the concluding stages, AMBITION hung out. S Dye (EVEN TILDEN) said the horse had done all its previous racing around the bend at Happy Valley and on those occasions when placed under pressure the horse lost its action and did not respond to his riding. He said he considered EVEN TILDEN to have a good chance in today's race as it was its first start at Sha Tin and being over a straight 1000 Metres would give him a chance to keep the horse balanced and for this purpose he refrained from using the whip on EVEN TILDEN. Mr J Size, trainer of EVEN TILDEN, said the horse had always shown speed in its track work and trials, had continued to be sound and he had not changed either its stable or work routine. He attributed today's improved performance to EVEN TILDEN having its first start at Sha Tin and being able to remain balanced racing on a straight course. He also did point out EVEN TILDEN had been dropping through the ratings. The explanations of S Dye and Mr Size were accepted. D Whyte (BEARCAT) explained the horse travelled well in the early stages, however, when asked to go forward at about the 500 Metres immediately got its head up and was reluctant to stretch out. He said it felt to him that BEARCAT was holding back and for this reason did not finish the race off. The explanations submitted by D Whyte were accepted. BEARCAT was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. After the race, BEARCAT was examined by the Veterinary Officer. No abnormalities were detected. GOLDEN STALLION was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. Following the race, GOLDEN STALLION, which returned making an abnormal breathing noise, was examined by the Veterinary Officer. An endoscopic examination was conducted. This showed GOLDEN STALLION was a "roarer". Before the horse can race again, it will be required to pass an official veterinary examination. HAPPY YEARS, EVEN TILDEN and SALUT BEAUTE were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Report (released on 10 Feb. 2003) :
Immediately following BEARCAT's poor performance in this race, it was examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer. He said at that time he was not able to detect any abnormalities.
The Senior Veterinary Officer today reported he again examined BEARCAT at the stables of Trainer D Cruz yesterday and said the horse was found to be lame in the right fore leg.
Before BEARCAT can race again, it will be required to pass an official veterinary examination.
