Racing Incident Report

KONRAD THE GREAT and CHIVAS LAD were slow to begin. TURBOJET began awkwardly. From the outside barrier, LUCKY SUPERSTAR was steadied and shifted across behind other runners. Shortly after the start, GLORY HERO, DASHING CHAMPION, MY HEART and ALF were crowded for room between ARROGANCE which shifted out and ALBELA which shifted in. In the early stages, PERFETTO, despite being ridden along in an endeavour to go forward, was unable to cross runners to its inside and at about the 1300 Metres was steadied, taken back and shifted in to find cover. At the 700 Metres, ALF, which was commencing to give ground, was steadied when momentarily crowded for room by KONRAD THE GREAT which was awkwardly placed inside the heels of ALBELA which got its head on the side and shifted in. After this, ALF tailed out. ALF was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of ALF did not reveal any significant findings. The performance of ALF was considered unacceptable. Before ALF will be permitted to race again, it must perform competitively in an official barrier trial and will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. In the Straight, when under pressure, PERFETTO hung in and proved difficult to ride. Throughout the race, DASHING CHAMPION hung out. PERFETTO, KONRAD THE GREAT and GLORY HERO were sent for sampling. Following the race, G Schofield reported MENDOZA had its tongue over the bit.
Additional Veterinary Report (released on 10 Feb. 2003) :
Immediately following ALF'S poor performance in this race, it was examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer. He said at that time he was not able to detect any significant findings.
The Senior Veterinary Officer today reported he again examined ALF at the stables of Trainer P C Kan yesterday and noted the horse was lame in the right fore leg with swelling to the tendon.
As previously advised, ALF will not be allowed to race again until it performs competitively in an official barrier trial and passes an official veterinary examination.
