Racing Incident Report
On jumping, SMART CHIEF and THUNDER MAN bumped. When the gates opened, ETERNAL FUN shifted in abruptly, then despite the efforts of E Saint-Martin, its rider, continued to shift in for some distance. As a result, crowding was caused to the inside of ETERNAL FUN. The main sufferers being SALUZI and BLACK KNIGHT which were checked. ON THE TEE was severely hampered, SIXTY SECONDS and WE'RE BUDDIES were crowded for room. After passing the winning post on the first occasion, ETERNAL FUN became unbalanced and bumped the running rail. After the 600 Metres, WE'RE BUDDIES, which was commencing to give ground, became unbalanced when tight inside RESOURCEFUL PRINCE. WE'RE BUDDIES was reluctant to maintain its position and gave ground quickly. ON THE TEE, which was following, was checked severely, EARL GREY checked and SALUZI inconvenienced. After the 600 Metres, BLACK KNIGHT was disappointed for running when endeavouring to shift out from behind SIXTY SECONDS. For some distance approaching and rounding the Home Turn, BLACK KNIGHT was held up behind SIXTY SECONDS and inside THUNDER MAN. The performance of WE'RE BUDDIES, which performed poorly, was considered unacceptable. Before WE'RE BUDDIES can race again, it will be required to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. W M Lai (RESOURCEFUL PRINCE) said he had been instructed to ride the horse in a "handy position" if possible tonight. He said these instructions were consistent with those issued to him when he rode the horse over the course and distance on 12 February 2003. He said on that occasion RESOURCEFUL PRINCE, despite his riding, was not able to obtain a "handy position". He said at its next start when racing at Sha Tin, RESOURCEFUL PRINCE was ridden behind midfield as instructed. Mr T K Ng, trainer of RESOURCEFUL PRINCE, confirmed the instructions issued to W M Lai on each occasion. He said at Sha Tin with a longer straight, it has always been and will continue to be his intention to have the horse ridden in a rearward position. He said however at Happy Valley with a shorter straight, it is his intention to have the horse ridden in a "handy position" as he believes it is too difficult to make up a significant amount of ground. The explanations submitted by W M Lai and Mr Ng were accepted. THUNDER MAN was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. A veterinary examination of THUNDER MAN after the race did not show any significant findings. RESOURCEFUL PRINCE and SONGS OF PRAISE were sent for sampling. After the race, SMART CHIEF was examined by the Veterinary Officer. An endoscopic examination was carried out. This showed a large amount of dirt in the horse's throat.
Additional Veterinary Report (released on 13 Mar. 2003) :
The Senior Veterinary Officer today reported he had examined ETERNAL FUN at the stables of Trainer D Hill this morning. The horse was noted to have been galloped on the right hind hock.
