Racing Incident Report

ONE MORE ROUND was presented in the Parade Ring without a ring bit, part of its approved gear. The horse was returned to the saddling stalls where a ring bit was fitted to its bridle. This resulted in a delay to the horses leaving the Parade Ring and consequently the start. Trainer J Moore was fined $2,000 for presenting ONE MORE ROUND in the Parade Ring without its approved gear. UNIVERSAL CHARGER was slow to begin. COMME D'HABITUDE began awkwardly. On jumping, ONE MORE ROUND was immediately steadied, shifted across behind runners to a position on the rail and then improved to race around midfield. In the early stages, MILLENNIUM SPIRIT had difficulty obtaining clear running. Making the turn at the 1400 Metres, CELESTIAL MAGIC got its head up and hung out. At the 800 Metres, MILLENNIUM SPIRIT was steadied when awkwardly placed inside the heels of FLORAL KING. Near the 700 Metres, NOBLE BOY lay in and was awkwardly placed close to the heels of ONE MORE ROUND. For some distance after the 700 Metres, KONRAD THE GREAT was bumped on several occasions, hampered and carried wider by MILLENNIUM SPIRIT (M Walker) which was endeavouring to shift to the outside of FLORAL KING to improve. M Walker was severely reprimanded and told whilst the Stewards encourage competitive riding, in slightly different circumstances, he could find himself in breach of a serious Rule. Near the 200 Metres, FLORAL KING was shifted to the inside of MR BASKETBALL and continued going forward. Near the 200 Metres, MR BASKETBALL was checked when crowded for room by COMME D'HABITUDE which shifted out while hanging despite the efforts of its rider to keep it straight. In the circumstances, no action was taken. Also near the 200 Metres, NASA PEARL was steadied and shifted in when disappointed for running between REWARD and CELESTIAL MAGIC which shifted ground when hanging out. Mr S Woods, trainer of MENDOZA, said the horse had been working well leading into today's race and was given some chance by the stable. He said when MENDOZA raced on the All Weather surface on 8 February 2003, it was the race following the track being harrowed after having initially been sealed. He said in his opinion MENDOZA did not appreciate the track surface and overall was disappointing. He said G Schofield, who rode the horse on that day, reported MENDOZA had been playing with the bit and because of this a tongue tie was added to the horse's gear. He said subsequent to that race, when racing over 1800 Metres on the turf at Sha Tin wearing a tongue tie, MENDOZA had performed well. FLORAL KING was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, FLORAL KING was examined by the Veterinary Officer. No significant findings were made. CELESTIAL MAGIC, MENDOZA and NASA PEARL were sent for sampling. After the race, MENDOZA was noted to be lame in the right fore leg. Before being permitted to race again, MENDOZA will be required to pass an official veterinary examination.
