Racing Incident Report
When the gates opened, MASCOT TREASURE refused to jump away and then when it did leave the stalls ducked left and made contact with the outside fence. After the field had gone for some distance, K S Yu managed to get MASCOT TREASURE to work off. Before being allowed to race again, MASCOT TREASURE will be required to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial from an outside draw. On jumping, OPERA MAGIC knuckled. Also on jumping, CORAJOSO and REWARD bumped. After the start, FAST TRACK was checked when crowded for room between TAKING THE LEAD and EXCITING TIMES. At the 1000 Metres, EXCITING TIMES was momentarily steadied when awkwardly placed inside the heels of NEVER SAY NEVER and outside FORTUNE LIFE which shifted out slightly. At the 800 Metres, GALLANT HORSE was awkwardly placed close to the heels of SOLAR EMPIRE. On straightening, SIR OCTAVIUS was carried wider by TAKING THE LEAD which shifted to the outside of EXCITING TIMES to obtain clear running. In the early part of the Straight, REWARD hung in. Because of this, M Walker, its rider, changed the whip into his left hand. Near the 100 Metres, KALIMANTAN, which was racing tight outside FORTUNE LIFE which in turn was racing tight on the outside of REWARD, clipped the heels of TAKING THE LEAD (D Whyte) and knuckled when TAKING THE LEAD which was hanging shifted in. The Stewards were satisfied that D Whyte had stopped riding and attempted to straighten his mount prior to this incident. In the circumstances, no action was taken. In the Straight, TAKING THE LEAD hung in and over the concluding stages proved difficult to ride out. For the major part of the race, KALIMANTAN was obliged to race wide and without cover. KALIMANTAN was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. After the race, KALIMANTAN was examined by the Veterinary Officer. No significant findings were made. SOLAR EMPIRE and CORAJOSO were sent for sampling. After the race, it was noted TAKING THE LEAD had sustained a laceration to its left hind pastern.
Additional Veterinary Report (released on 19 May 2003) :
MASCOT TREASURE, which initially refused to jump when the start was effected and then shifted out abruptly, was this morning examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer C H Yip and was found to be showing significant hind limb stiffness.
Before being permitted to race again, MASCOT TREASURE will be required to pass an official veterinary examination in addition to the official barrier trial as previously advised.
