Racing Incident Report

SMILEY WIN was withdrawn on 23.5.03 on veterinary grounds (lame left fore) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter FANTASTICO (Apprentice K T Yeung). Before being allowed to race again, SMILEY WIN will be required to pass an official veterinary examination. PRINCESS BEAUTY began awkwardly and got its head up. SCREAMING EAGLE was slow to begin, then on jumping shifted out and bumped the outside gate of its stall. At the 1000 Metres, HANDSOME MAN, which was being hard ridden to hold its position, was unable to do so and was steadied from between SUPER BEST and CHIU CHOW HERO which was racing tight inside ASIA STAR. In the early stages, SCREAMING EAGLE hung in. At the 800 Metres, GOLD CHARM was steadied when racing tight inside GANBATTE which itself was hanging in and shifted ground after being bumped by FANTASTICO which in turn had been bumped by PERFECT SCORE. When GOLD CHARM steadied, PRINCESS BEAUTY, which was following, was steadied in consequence. At the 700 Metres, FANTASTICO was steadied away from the heels of PERFECT SCORE (Apprentice P H Lo) which after hanging out shifted in when not clear. In the circumstances, Apprentice P H Lo was advised to exercise more care. On the latter part of the Home Turn and in the early part of the Home Straight, PRINCESS BEAUTY was held up and unable to obtain clear running, then near the 300 Metres was steadied and shifted out when disappointed for running between HANDSOME MAN and GOLD CHARM which shifted in. For some distance after straightening, CHIU CHOW HERO was held up and unable to obtain clear running behind ASIA STAR and inside PERFECT SCORE. At the 300 Metres, SUPER BEST was steadied when racing tight inside the heels of CHIU CHOW HERO. After the 300 Metres, MARIPOSA was bumped by WINNING SPECIAL which was shifting to the outside of PRINCESS BEAUTY to obtain clear running. Over the final 200 Metres, SOUND LOVER hung in and proved difficult to ride. In the Straight, when giving ground GANBATTE hung in. S K Sit (BUTTERFORD) said he had been instructed to ride the horse in a forward position, it began only fairly, then despite his riding did not stretch out and tailed out. He said the horse did not show any signs of soreness. BUTTERFORD was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, BUTTERFORD was examined by the Veterinary Officer. No significant findings were made. The performance of BUTTERFORD was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, BUTTERFORD will be required to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. MARIPOSA was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. After the race, MARIPOSA was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said the horse had bled from both nostrils. SCREAMING EAGLE and ASIA STAR were sent for sampling.
