Racing Incident Report

KING OF FIELD was slow to begin. After being loaded, KOWLOON STAR became fractious. KOWLOON STAR, which was standing badly, began awkwardly, shifted out and causing crowding to FORTUNE BUILDER. Before being allowed to race again, KOWLOON STAR will be required to perform satisfactorily in a stalls test. MEMBERS GLORY began awkwardly, got its head up, shifted out and bumped the outside gate of its stall. Making the Home Turn, KOWLOON STAR hung out. At the 100 Metres, KING OF FIELD, which was closing the race off fairly, was momentarily steadied and shifted out away from the heels of SWISS LAD which was giving ground. Y T Cheng (MAMOUSKA) explained he had been instructed to ride the horse where it was comfortable. He said last season MAMOUSKA did not begin well in its races and consequently raced in midfield or behind. He said today he gave MAMOUSKA a good warm up behind the barriers, the horse began well and he therefore allowed it to travel forward from the start. He said however MAMOUSKA was unable to show enough pace to clear runners on its inside and consequently was obliged to race four wide outside the lead without cover. He said in the circumstances MAMOUSKA stayed on well over the concluding stages. D Dunn (SWISS LAD) explained he had been riding the horse in its work leading into today's race and in his opinion this work had been good. He said recently he had ridden SWISS LAD in a barrier trial and whilst this trial was not run in fast time, in his opinion SWISS LAD trialed well. He said SWISS LAD today began well and he initially was going to take up a position behind the leaders, however, when he became aware that WE'RE BUDDIES was crossing from his outside, he elected to maintain his position outside KOWLOON STAR in the lead as he was of the opinion WE'RE BUDDIES would not carry him forward into the race. He said SWISS LAD travelled comfortably in the run until straightening, however, when placed under pressure in the Straight failed to respond. He said after the race SWISS LAD pulled up well and he was unable to offer any explanation for the horse's performance. KOWLOON STAR, BARFOLD HERO and SWISS LAD were sent for sampling. After the race, CHERISHED was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a significant amount of mucus in the horse's trachea. Before CHERISHED can race again, it will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
