Racing Incident Report
PEAK POWER was withdrawn on 5.9.03 on veterinary grounds (lame right hind). Before being allowed to race again, PEAK POWER will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. After arriving at the Start, TOP PRIZE was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon. The horse was trotted up and after the necessary consultations was considered suitable to race. ROMANTIC SYMPHONY was slow to begin. Shortly after the start, SUNBELL shifted in and bumped MOMENTUM. At the 1400 Metres, CLASSA VICTORY and GOOD RECORD were steadied when crowded for room by SUNBELL (J Quinn) which shifted in momentarily. J Quinn was reprimanded and advised to exercise more care. For some distance after this, GOOD RECORD proved difficult to settle. Near the 800 Metres, SUNBELL, which had its head turned and was inclined to shift in, was momentarily steadied away from the heels of DANEHILL WARRIOR. In the early part of the Straight, MOMENTUM was unable to obtain clear running behind CLASSA VICTORY and NASA PEARL. To obtain clear running near the 300 Metres, MOMENTUM was shifted to the outside of NASA PEARL, then over the concluding stages again had difficulty obtaining clear running between TOP PRIZE and SUNBELL and because of this was not ridden out to the line as it normally would be. Throughout the race, TOP PRIZE raced wide and without cover. A Marcus (GREENMORE) explained prior to mounting the horse he discussed with Trainer S T Wong the possibility of riding the horse in a forward position. He said he had noted GREENMORE had a history of being slow to begin, travelling in a rearward position and then finishing the race off strongly, however, of late rarely winning. He said he rode GREENMORE in track work last Thursday morning and the horse worked to him surprisingly well and as a result of this he formed the opinion that if ridden in a manner which would leave it not too much to do, the horse would have a strong chance in today's race. He said he was of the firm opinion today's track appeared to suit horses which were ridden in a forward position. He said after arriving at the Start he gave GREENMORE a good warm up behind the gates in an endeavour to get the horse to begin well. He said when the gates opened GREENMORE began cleanly, he rode along hard initially in the early stages and was able to lead comfortably, however, GREENMORE travelled a little bit keener than he would have wished until the 800 Metres and consequently the tempo of the race was faster than anticipated. Mr Wong said he had not issued A Marcus with firm riding instructions, however, he agreed to allow A Marcus to ride the horse as he felt it would be best suited. Mr Wong said he concurred with A Marcus that today's track appeared to be suiting horses racing in a forward position. Mr Wong did say however he was surprised GREENMORE was able to lead in the manner in which it did. Mr Wong and A Marcus were told their explanations for GREENMORE leading today would be recorded and it is expected of them that the horse be ridden in a somewhat consistent manner unless otherwise advised. FLYING BISHOP, DANEHILL WARRIOR and SUNBELL were sent for sampling.
