Racing Incident Report
WINNING SMILE was difficult to load. Before being permitted to race again, WINNING SMILE will have to perform satisfactorily in a stalls test. After being boxed, CHINA WORLD reared and then sat down. The horse was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon and after the necessary consultations was considered suitable to race. LIGHTING THE WORLD began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped the outside gate of its stall. WINNING SMILE and PEACH BLOSSOM were slow to begin. After the 800 Metres, SILLY BOY was steadied when crowded by NEWSWIRE which momentarily shifted in when not clear. Making the turn at the 600 Metres, SHOGUN, which was travelling keenly, was steadied away from the heels of PEACH BLOSSOM. Also making the turn at the 600 Metres, GREAT VALUE hung out. Making the Home Turn, AFICIONADO became unbalanced when crowded for room inside NEWSWIRE which got its head on the side and shifted in away from BACK SEAT DRIVER. PEACH BLOSSOM, which was following, was shifted out away from the heels of AFICIONADO. This in turn caused inconvenience to SHOGUN which was checked. After the 200 Metres, CHINA WORLD, which was giving ground, was crowded for room between WINNING SMILE and SHOGUN. Near the 100 Metres, H K Yim (BACK SEAT DRIVER) had the whip knocked from his hand by the whip of D Dunn (SILLY BOY). K C Tsang (NAMJONG TREASURE) was severely reprimanded for making a celebratory gesture prior to the winning post. R Fradd (WINNING SMILE) explained the horse had previously been difficult in the gates and when racing and working around turns had run out. He said because of this tonight he allowed WINNING SMILE to be properly balanced in the early stages, shifted to the extreme outside so that if the horse failed to make the turn at the 600 Metres, he would not cause interference. He said WINNING SMILE travelled comfortably, made the turns nicely and then kept on well in the Straight. R Fradd's explanations were accepted. BACK SEAT DRIVER, NAMJONG TREASURE and SHOGUN were sent for sampling.
