Racing Incident Report
At declaration time, Apprentice M W Leung was declared to ride both SERIOUS PLAY and SPRINTER. Mr L Ho, trainer of SERIOUS PLAY, explained he had negligently declared Apprentice Leung to ride SERIOUS PLAY after having previously been advised he was unavailable. For his negligence, Mr Ho was fined $2,000. Y T Cheng was permitted to be substituted as the rider of SERIOUS PLAY. LUCKY LAD was withdrawn on 16.1.04 on veterinary grounds (severe skin allergy). Before being allowed to race again, LUCKY LAD will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. CHINOOK began awkwardly, got its head up and then was steadied away from the heels of LITTLE ELEPHANT. On jumping THUNDER STORM and NILOMETER bumped. TOM'S FIRST and SERIOUS PLAY were slow to begin. From the outside barrier, LITTLE ELEPHANT raced three wide and without cover throughout in a forward position. At the 1100 Metres, SERIOUS PLAY was steadied when crowded for room between SUNNY RIVIERA and CHINOOK which shifted in slightly when being steadied away from the heels of SPARKLING STAR. At the 600 Metres, WEALTHY TREASURE was steadied away from the heels of THUNDER STORM which shifted back towards the rail after momentarily shifting out. For some distance after the 400 Metres, WEALTHY TREASURE was held up and unable to obtain clear running behind INVERNESS. After the 300 Metres, NILOMETER had difficulty obtaining clear running between LITTLE ELEPHANT and inside ENTERTAINING. Near the 200 Metres, THUNDER STORM which was giving ground, was checked when crowded for room inside WEALTHY TREASURE (C Williams) which was shifting in away from the heels of INVERNESS after being awkwardly placed. C Williams was severely reprimanded and told whilst the Stewards accepted he was in some difficulty, he should do his utmost to protect his fellow riders. Over the final 200 Metres, when being ridden out, SPARKLING STAR (S K Sit) shifted in and made contact on a number of occasions with ENTERTAINING. S K Sit was reprimanded and told in similar circumstances he would be expected to stop riding and straighten his mount much sooner than he did on this occasion. In the Straight, SUNNY RIVIERA hung in. INVERNESS was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, INVERNESS, which performed poorly, was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a significant amount of mucus in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, INVERNESS will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. TOM'S FIRST, ENTERTAINING and LITTLE ELEPHANT were sent for sampling.
