Racing Incident Report

After being boxed, CORNWALL CHIEFS was fractious, then when the gates opened whilst standing with its head turned to the left hand side began awkwardly. Before being allowed to race again, CORNWALL CHIEFS will have to perform satisfactorily in a stalls test. WEI SHAN began awkwardly and got its head up, then in the middle stages raced greenly. BALL OF FIRE and MAGIC TEMPLE were a little slow to begin. After the 1400 Metres, CHING HOI BOY was momentarily steadied when awkwardly placed inside the heels of TRIUMPH which shifted in when only just clear. In the early stages, TRIUMPH and ELITE WIN which from their wide barriers had raced without cover and proved difficult to settle, then travelled into a forward position. Near the 1300 Metres, BALL OF FIRE, which was proving difficult to settle, got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of TIGER DAN which was carried in by COUNTRY DRAGON (Apprentice P H Lo) which shifted in when not properly clear. Apprentice P H Lo was severely reprimanded and told in similar circumstances he should ensure he is properly clear of other runners before shifting ground. For some distance after this, BALL OF FIRE continued to get its head up when racing close to the heels of TIGER DAN. After the 1200 Metres, SUPER MARKSMAN proved difficult to settle when close to the heels of TRIUMPH. Near the 200 Metres, TIGER DAN was steadied away from the heels of BALL OF FIRE which shifted out abruptly. S Dye (CHERISHED) explained in the early part of the Straight he considered shifting to the outside, however, he was unable to do so as he was racing inside the heels of WEI SHAN. He said after the 300 Metres MAGIC TEMPLE which had been racing to his inside commenced to shift out and at the same time WEI SHAN which was giving ground was hanging in, because of this CHERISHED was momentarily crowded for room between these horses and unable to improve his position. He said shortly after this clear running presented itself between these horses and he immediately rode CHERISHED along and the horse finished the race off fairly. The explanation submitted by S Dye was accepted. When questioned, Apprentice K T Yeung (TREASURE FIELD) said passing the 800 Metres he was in a rearward position and following EAST OCEAN DRAGON. He said he wanted to ensure TREASURE FIELD was not blocked for running in the Home Straight as had occurred at its previous start, he therefore elected to steady his mount and allow CHERISHED and CORNWALL CHIEFS to go forward of him before shifting to the outside of those horses after the 600 Metres. He said this meant he was the widest runner turning in. Apprentice K T Yeung was told in the opinion of the Stewards he erred by giving up his position on the back of EAST OCEAN DRAGON at the 600 Metres, steadying his mount, losing his position, shifting out and thereby covering extra ground around the Home Turn. He was also told whilst the Stewards appreciated he is relatively inexperienced at this stage of his career, in similar circumstances he would be expected to ride with more initiative than he did on this occasion. SUPER MARKSMAN was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, SUPER MARKSMAN was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said there were no significant findings other than he noted the horse had lost its right front plate. BALL OF FIRE, EAST OCEAN DRAGON and TRIUMPH were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Reports (released on 26 January 2004)
SUPER MARKSMAN, which performed poorly, was examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer. He said at that time there were no significant findings. SUPER MARKSMAN was again examined by the Head of Veterinary Regulation & International Liaison at the stables of Trainer Y O Wong yesterday morning. He said at this time the horse was lame in the right front leg. Before being allowed to race again, SUPER MARKSMAN will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
