Racing Incident Report
Due to a misunderstanding, C Williams was declared to ride both BRAVE COMMANDER and GOOD GOOD. It was established that C Williams had a firm commitment to BRAVE COMMANDER. As such, the Stewards permitted Apprentice P H Lo to be substituted as the rider of GOOD GOOD at declarations. C Williams' explanation for having accepted the two riding engagements in this race was accepted. After leaving the Parade Ring, S K Sit was dislodged from STAR OF SHANTOU. STAR OF SHANTOU worked around to the 1800 Metres before being recaptured. The horse was taken to the barriers where it was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. FUJI SUNRISE began awkwardly, made heavy contact with the inside gate of its stall and consequently lost ground. ALAKAZAM was slow to begin. Near the 1000 Metes, LUCKY CHAMPION was crowded for room between STAR OF SHANTOU which got its head on the side and shifted out and GOOD GOOD which was carried in by FAVOURITE EXPRESS (D Dunn) which shifted in when not properly clear. As the Stewards were satisfied STAR OF SHANTOU had contributed to this incident, it was considered appropriate in the circumstances to issue D Dunn with a severe reprimand. At the 800 Metres, FIRST KNIGHT and STAR OF SHANTOU were momentarily crowded for room inside GOOD GOOD which shifted in. In this incident, LUCKY CHAMPION was steadied away from the heels of STAR OF SHANTOU. After this incident, GOOD GOOD got its head up and hung out. After the 600 Metres, KING OF THE TURF was steadied and shifted out to avoid the heels of LUCKY CHAMPION which momentarily shifted in. Shortly after straightening, KING OF THE TURF was shifted out in an endeavour to find clear running. Near the 300 Metres, LUCKY CHAMPION and FIRST KNIGHT bumped, then after the 200 Metres FIRST KNIGHT was carried wider by LUCKY CHAMPION which when being ridden out hung out and shifted ground. After this, LUCKY CHAMPION continued to prove difficult to ride and was not ridden out to the line as it normally would be. After the 200 Metres, FAVOURITE EXPRESS was bumped by CHING HOI BOY which when being ridden out commenced to hang in and shifted ground. D Dunn (FAVOURITE EXPRESS) said he had formed the opinion the going was superior away from the rail, therefore when FAVOURITE EXPRESS hung out making the Home Turn, he then in the early part of the Straight allowed the horse to shift out and when he received a call from a rider on his outside he had a look to ensure he was not causing interference to other runners. The explanation of D Dunn was accepted. C Williams (BRAVE COMMANDER) said the intention had been to have the horse ridden forward as usual. He said BRAVE COMMANDER began fairly, he rode along in the early stages, however, when a number of runners maintained their positions on his inside, he felt he would have to make too much use of the horse to cross to the lead. He pointed out when previously successful when leading, BRAVE COMMANDER had been able to obtain the lead without being made use of. He said near the 900 Metres AURELIAN went forward and crossed to the fence and at this time he endeavoured to obtain cover on BRAVE COMMANDER behind JOINT PEACE, however, when GOOD GOOD held its position behind that horse, he was obliged to remain racing four wide and without cover. He said after straightening BRAVE COMMANDER gave ground quickly. He said in his opinion even having taken into account the horse travelling wide and without cover, it should not have compounded in the manner in which it did and as soon as it did. Having in mind the manner in which BRAVE COMMANDER gave ground in the Straight, the explanation of C Williams was accepted. BRAVE COMMANDER and JOINT PEACE were sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of BRAVE COMMANDER and JOINT PEACE after the race did not show any significant findings. Before being allowed to race again, BRAVE COMMANDER will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. FUJI SUNRISE, GLORIOUS RHYTHM and STAR OF SHANTOU were sent for sampling.
