Racing Incident Report

On jumping, HONOUR SUPREME was crowded for room between OUR JET which shifted in abruptly and ABSOLUTE CHAMPION which was a little slow to begin and shifted out. Shortly after this, ABSOLUTE CHAMPION was steadied when awkwardly placed inside HONOUR SUPREME. Near the 800 Metres, WYNDAM EASY, which was racing with blinkers re-applied tonight and was proving difficult to settle, was checked when momentarily crowded for room inside BILLET EXPRESS which itself when proving difficult to settle shifted in away from CLASSIC NAVIGATOR (F Coetzee) which initially shifted in when not clear before being corrected. In the circumstances, F Coetzee was reprimanded and advised to exercise more care. Near the 700 Metres, ABSOLUTE CHAMPION shifted in and bumped the running rail. On straightening, CLASSIC NAVIGATOR became unbalanced behind after being bumped by TIGER RIDGE. Shortly after straightening, EVERY TIME was steadied and shifted to the inside of TIGER RIDGE. Near the 100 Metres, WYNDAM EASY shifted out after being bumped by KINGSTON WINNER which was carried out slightly by SAN LORENZO. Shortly after this, WYNDAM EASY was carried out further by KINGSTON WINNER and made contact with the hindquarters of FANTASY which as a result was turned in across the running of WYNDAM EASY, causing WYNDAM EASY to be checked. In the Straight, FANTASY hung in. When questioned, C Soumillon (BILLET EXPRESS) said the horse usually shows itself to be keen in track work, however, when he had ridden the horse on two occasions in the week leading into tonight's race, the horse had been somewhat more subdued than is usual. He said he had reported this to the horse's trainer, Mr J Moore. He said when the horse was successful over 1200 Metres at its most recent start, the horse on that occasion raced with cover behind the lead. He said with this in mind and the consideration that 1200 Metres is the upper limit in distance for BILLET EXPRESS, he was again instructed if possible not to make use of the horse and find cover, however, if the pace of the race was slow it would be acceptable for him to lead, but he was not to ride along to do so. He said BILLET EXPRESS began best and he niggled along in the early stages to ensure the horse went into a forward position, however, approaching the 1000 Metres he was aware TIGER RIDGE and EVERY TIME were to his inside and he would have to ride along to clear TIGER RIDGE. He said with this in mind he took a sit off that horse and when CLASSIC NAVIGATOR improved around him to go forward, he was happy to let that horse go and provide him with cover. He said after this SAN LORENZO also improved around his outside, but he was able to maintain his position behind the leaders and follow them into the Home Straight. He said after straightening clear running presented itself, however, BILLET EXPRESS did not respond to his riding and over the concluding stages gave ground and was most disappointing. Before concluding this matter, the Stewards will interview Mr Moore. BILLET EXPRESS was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. After the race, BILLET EXPRESS was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said there were no significant findings. The Stewards deferred the declaration of weighed-in while they considered if ARABIAN WAGER had had an unfair start. Evidence was taken from W M Lai, the rider of ARABIAN WAGER. Evidence was also taken from the Starter, Mr P Waldron, the Deputy Starter, Mr T McGovern and the Veterinary Surgeon positioned at the Start, Dr M J Hurley. W M Lai explained after being boxed ARABIAN WAGER became fractious and momentarily sat down behind. He said ARABIAN WAGER immediately corrected itself. He said when the gate opened, ARABIAN WAGER stood flat-footed, put its head down, refused to jump and as such took no part in the race. W M Lai said when ARABIAN WAGER was fractious in the stalls, at no time did its head come into contact with the barriers. W M Lai's evidence was supported by Mr Waldron, Mr McGovern, Dr Hurley and also the video evidence. As such, the Stewards were satisfied ARABIAN WAGER had not had an unfair start and was declared a starter. Dr Hurley subsequently reported that some time after ARABIAN WAGER had been removed from the stalls, blood appeared at both the horse's nostrils. ARABIAN WAGER was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. Subsequently ARABIAN WAGER was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said an endoscopic examination showed the horse's trachea to be clean and therefore ARABIAN WAGER was not deemed to have bled. ARABIAN WAGER will undergo a further veterinary examination tomorrow. After the Stewards are in receipt of the finding of this examination, they will decide whether any action ought to be taken against ARABIAN WAGER. FANTASY and EVERY TIME were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Reports (released on 17 February 2005)
The Senior Veterinary Officer has today reported ARABIAN WAGER, which did not leave the barriers and took no part in this race, has been further examined and reported at this time to have significantly impaired vision. He said the exact cause of this vision impairment cannot be determined and while ARABIAN WAGER did have blood present at its nostrils after the race there were no external indications of the horse having suffered a head trauma. The Senior Veterinary Officer added when he examined ARABIAN WAGER immediately after the race the horse did not show any signs of vision impairment and appeared normal in its reactions. He said the cause of the delayed onset of the vision impairment may be related to the presence of blood at the horse's nostrils and is the subject of an ongoing investigation The Stewards will not finalise this matter until such investigation is completed.
