Racing Incident Report

When the gates opened, DASHING WINNER threw its head about, began awkwardly and lost ground. From a wide barrier, PERPETUAL PLEASURE was immediately steadied and shifted across behind runners to a position on the rail but at the rear. Near the 1600 Metres, TOP HONOR, which was proving difficult to settle, got its head up. Near the 800 Metres, LEILATI was steadied away from the heels of COSMO SUCCESS which was not holding its position. Near the 700 Metres, LEILATI was steadied when awkwardly placed inside the heels of COSMO SUCCESS and outside DASHING WINNER which at this time was endeavouring to shift to the outside of CHALLENGER which itself shifted out. In the early part of the Straight, CHALLENGER was held up when unable to obtain clear running. Near the 200 Metres, GIFT, which was giving ground, was momentarily steadied away from the heels of PERPETUAL PLEASURE. In the Straight, ART TRADER hung in. When questioned, E Saint-Martin (COSMO SUCCESS) said in the early stages he was racing three wide and without cover outside DEEP OCEAN and he was hopeful TOP HONOR would press on and race upsides LIBERAL'S CHOICE rather than sitting one length off that horse which might have allowed him the opportunity to obtain cover. He said when TOP HONOR remained racing back off the leader he after the 1000 Metres looked to his inside to see if there was an opportunity for him to shift back behind DEEP OCEAN to a position with cover, however, he was not clear of ART TRADER and therefore remained racing three wide. He said near the 800 Metres he was reluctant to ride his mount along as it was not travelling well and he felt it would have been detrimental to his chances. He said because of this ART TRADER was able to shift from his inside into a four wide position and commence to improve near the 600 Metres. He said he rode COSMO SUCCESS along before straightening, however, the horse failed to respond. E Saint-Martin was told his explanation would be reported. PERPETUAL PLEASURE, ART TRADER and LIBERAL'S CHOICE were sent for sampling.
