Racing Incident Report

FORTUNE LAD, which was restless in the barriers, began awkwardly and lost ground. From the outside gate, TO SIR WITH LOVE was immediately steadied and taken across behind runners. Shortly after the start, SUNNY DESERT was checked when crowded for room between THUNDER MAN and LA MERVEILLE which got its head on the side and shifted in. At the winning post on the first occasion, FORTUNE LAD was momentarily steadied when awkwardly placed inside the heels of FANTASTIC WIN. After the winning post on the first occasion, EUPHORIC KID was bumped by ATHLETIC GOLD which shifted in. For some distance after the 1200 Metres, FORTUNE LAD and THUNDER MAN raced tight between FANTASTIC WIN and SUNNY DESERT. As a result, THUNDER MAN was unable to maintain its position and was steadied. At the 800 Metres, FORTUNE LAD got its head on the side and commenced to hang out. FORTUNE LAD continued to hang out for the remainder of the race. On straightening, NICKU NICKU was bumped by A-TACK which after making contact with the running rail shifted out. Shortly after straightening, Apprentice C K Tong (THUNDER MAN) dropped his whip. For a short distance near the 200 Metres, FANTASTIC WIN had difficulty obtaining clear running inside ATHLETIC GOLD. When questioned regarding the poor performance of NICKU NICKU, W M Lai said he was unable to offer any explanation other than in his opinion the horse does not appreciate racing without cover. He said he was instructed if possible to ride the horse in a forward position with cover, accordingly he began well, went forward and crossed to race outside CHINA WORLD, hoping that horse would continue on and enable him to obtain a trailing position. He said however ISLAND SPIRIT maintained its position behind CHINA WORLD and consequently he was left racing without cover. NICKU NICKU was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. A veterinary inspection of NICKU NICKU after the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of NICKU NICKU was considered unacceptable. Before being permitted to race again, NICKU NICKU will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. ISLAND SPIRIT and LA MERVEILLE were sent for sampling.
