Racing Incident Report
When being led to the Start, OPERA MAGIC was kicked on the left hind leg by the lead pony. OPERA MAGIC was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who said the horse was lame in the left hind leg and in his opinion was not suitable to race. Acting on this advice, the Stewards ordered the withdrawal of OPERA MAGIC. Before being allowed to race again, OPERA MAGIC will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. MAXIMUM JOY and HAWKIE STAR were slow to begin. Making the turn at the 700 Metres, HAWKIE STAR hung out. In the middle stages, FORTUNE GOLD and NOBLE VICTORY, which were racing wide, hung out. Shortly after straightening, NOBLE VICTORY was shifted to the outside of SUPREME MOLLY into clear running. When questioned, B Prebble (LASER GLORY) said prior to the horse's last start he had trialed the horse on the All Weather surface. He said in this trial LASER GLORY which usually races in a forward position was ridden well back in the field and then finished the trial off very strongly. He said prior to this race he had discussed the manner in which LASER GLORY should be ridden with Mr P F Yiu, trainer of the horse, and it had been decided as in recent starts LASER GLORY had lost form when being ridden in a forward position, today it should be attempted to have the horse ridden quietly in the hope it would finish the race off in the same manner it did in the barrier trial. B Prebble said after beginning well he allowed runners drawn to his inside to go forward of him in accordance with his instructions. He said approaching the 800 Metres LASER GLORY was racing in a position outside HAWKIE STAR, however, at that point he received some crowding from the outside when STAR OF NORTHERN was carried in slightly by FORTUNE GOLD. He said because of his riding instructions he did not ride along to maintain his position at that time as he felt it was preferable to ensure LASER GLORY was travelling comfortably. He said after the 600 Metres he commenced to ride LASER GLORY along, the horse did not pick up the bit as expected and in the Straight finished the race off only fairly without being able to make an impression on the leaders. Mr P F Yiu, trainer of LASER GLORY, confirmed the riding instructions issued to B Prebble and said because the horse had been performing poorly recently when ridden in a forward position and had performed well when ridden back in a trial of today's surface he felt it was in the best interests of the horse to have it ridden this way. He did say it was disappointing LASER GLORY again did not finish the race off. The explanations submitted by B Prebble and Mr Yiu were accepted. LASER GLORY was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of LASER GLORY after the race did not show any significant findings. HIP HIP HOORAY and DOUCAI were sent for sampling.
