Racing Incident Report
BEST GIFT began awkwardly, got its head up and bounded in the air. ELEGANT FASHION was a little slow to begin and then lost its position when crowded for room between SUPER COMBED and HEALTHY WEALTHY which bounded in the air at the start and then was bumped by ART TRADER which was carried in by SUMMERLAND. Near the 2000 Metres, SUPREME RABBIT was crowded for room inside PRECISION which was racing tight inside ROOSEVELT which was carried in slightly by SUMMERLAND. Making the turn at the 1800 Metres, SUPREME RABBIT bumped the running rail when awkwardly placed close to the heels of ART TRADER. After this, SUPREME RABBIT proved difficult to settle and continued to race awkwardly when close to the heels of ART TRADER. On two occasions between the 1300 Metres and the 1200 Metres, BEST GIFT got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of SUMMERLAND. Passing the 400 Metres, ART TRADER was held up when unable to improve between PRECISION and SUPER COMBED. ART TRADER was then steadied and shifted towards the outside of SUPER COMBED. After the 400 Metres, NATIVE DREAM was steadied away from the heels of SUMMERLAND which shifted out. F Coetzee (SUPER COMBED) said the intention had been to ride the horse at the rear and quietly as is normal. He said in the early stages the tempo of the race was good and SUPER COMBED got back to last and travelled comfortably inside ELEGANT FASHION and behind SUPREME RABBIT which was proving difficult to settle. He said near the 1700 Metres the tempo of the race appeared to slacken noticeably, SUPER COMBED travelled into the bridle which it does not usually do and attempted to improve between SUPREME RABBIT and INDUSTRIAL SUCCESS where there was insufficient room. He said when this happened he made a decision to shift SUPER COMBED out into a three wide position so it was not caught well back on the fence in a slowly run race. He said because of the way the race was being run at this stage he was concerned it would develop into a sprint home which would give SUPER COMBED little chance if it remained racing in this position on a track that appeared to suit front runners. He said when he shifted out to a three wide position he was hopeful of improving around INDUSTRIAL SUCCESS, then shifting in to a position with cover behind PRECISION, however, as he went forward INDUSTRIAL SUCCESS went forward with him to hold him in a three wide position without cover. He said after entering the Back Straight he allowed SUPER COMBED to gradually improve its position without applying any pressure to do so. F Coetzee was told his explanation would be reported. SUPER COMBED, SATURN and LUCKSWELL were sent for sampling.
