Racing Incident Report

When the gates opened, SHARE THE FUN, which had been fractious, sat back in its stall, began awkwardly, then was checked when crowded for room between KA KA SMART and SPACE SHUTTLE which shifted in abruptly. KA KA SMART was slow to begin. FAT CHOY FOREVER leant against the inside gate of its stall when the gates opened and lost ground. Making the turn at the 700 Metres, DASHING WINNER was bumped by TAIJI SPIRIT which got its head on the side and hung in. Also making the turn at the 700 Metres, HARMONY became unbalanced, shifted out and bumped the hindquarters of BOLD FIGHTER. Before the 400 Metres, DRAGON HORSE was carried wider by FAT CHOY FOREVER which shifted to the outside of BOLD FIGHTER into clear running. Near the 300 Metres, DASHING WINNER, which was having difficulty obtaining clear running, was steadied and shifted to the inside of BOLD FIGHTER which was giving ground. Near the 200 Metres, SPACE SHUTTLE, which when closing the race off nicely and having difficulty obtaining clear running, was shifted out abruptly away from the heels of HARMONY which was giving ground. Throughout the race, SUPER CHARGE raced wide and without cover. F Coetzee (CALIFORNIA HEART) was unable to offer an explanation for the poor performance of the horse. He said the pace of the race in the early stages meant that he was slightly further back than he had hoped, however, for him to be further forward would have required him to make significant use of CALIFORNIA HEART. He said he obtained a nice position making the turn at the 700 Metres, however, prior to straightening CALIFORNIA HEART was under pressure and failed to respond to his riding. He said the work of CALIFORNIA HEART leading into tonight's race in his opinion had been very good and as such it was felt the horse would figure prominently. The performance of CALIFORNIA HEART was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, CALIFORNIA HEART will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. CALIFORNIA HEART and BOLD FIGHTER were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of CALIFORNIA HEART after the race did not show any significant findings. After the race, BOLD FIGHTER was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said the horse had bled from both nostrils. FAT CHOY FOREVER, TAIJI SPIRIT and NEW MILESTONE were sent for sampling. Following the race, it was reported NEW MILESTONE had bled from both nostrils and HARMONY was making an abnormal breathing noise.
