Racing Incident Report
FORTUNE LAD and AMBITIOUS LEADER were slow to begin. Approaching the winning post on the first occasion, PLEASANT JOURNEY was steadied when awkwardly placed close to the heels of OH GREAT. For some distance after this, PLEASANT JOURNEY raced ungenerously, got its head on the side and hung out. Making the turn at the 600 Metres, JUST IN TIME was steadied away from the heels of GOOD FRIENDS which shifted out after initially shifting in and bumping PLEASANT JOURNEY. Shortly after straightening, FORTUNE LAD was momentarily steadied when unable to improve between AMBITIOUS LEADER and GOOD FRIENDS. At the 200 Metres, GOOD FRIENDS was steadied away from the heels of PLEASANT JOURNEY which shifted out when being steadied away from the heels of BAYVIEW LAD. Throughout the race, AMBITIOUS LEADER raced wide and without cover. G Mossé (OH GREAT) said he had been instructed to make use of the horse's more favourable barrier draw tonight, endeavour to have it leave the gates cleanly and obtain a more forward position on the rail. He said in the past OH GREAT had shown a reluctance to race amongst horses in the early stages and as a consequence generally raced behind midfield. He said OH GREAT began well, he rode along in the early stages in accordance with his instructions, was able to cross to the fence and obtain a position trailing the leaders. Mr A Lee, trainer of OH GREAT, confirmed the riding instructions issued to G Mossé and said in his opinion the pace of tonight's race would not be strong. He said he felt it was in the best interests of OH GREAT for the horse to make use of its barrier. He said OH GREAT had not always begun well and had then shown a reluctance to hold a position. He said when racing like this, OH GREAT in his opinion had been a little disappointing. Mr Lee was told whilst the Stewards accepted his explanation, he was reminded of his responsibilities to have horses trained by him ridden in a consistent manner where possible. The declaration of weighed-in was deferred while the Stewards considered whether BUDDIES SPIRIT had had an unfair start. Evidence was taken from D Dunn, the rider of BUDDIES SPIRIT and the official videos of the start were viewed. It was established that BUDDIES SPIRIT which had been fractious in the barrier reared as the start was effected, became cast with its right front leg over the adjoining barrier partition and therefore was not able to jump. The Stewards believed as BUDDIES SPIRIT had created its own problems, this was not an appropriate occasion on which they should exercise their powers under Rule 12(19) and as such BUDDIES SPIRIT was deemed not to have had an unfair start and weighed-in was declared on the Judge's placings. The barrier behaviour of BUDDIES SPIRIT was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, BUDDIES SPIRIT will have to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial. JUST IN TIME was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of JUST IN TIME after the race did not show any significant findings. PLEASANT JOURNEY, OH GREAT and SWEETIE were sent for sampling.
